Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Sarasota is still scheduled but high, cold winds could cost a second postponement in two years. Feb. 17 the length of the course properly navigated, said Randy Rave, race chairman. Officially, it's called the Hennessey Hurricane Classic, as sponsored by the Hennessey Cognac people of France and the the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Drivers met here yesterday and got their instructions.

Then some tried the water but not many. It was rough and it was cold. That's the way it was a year ago for both Saturday and Sunday, forcing a week's postponement. If it's a no-show today, the race wiij be rescheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. Blue laws prevent the noon start on Sun- day.

As of last night, there were entered: 18 inboard offshore 1 boats, six offshore outboards, 9 production class, and 12 little Hurricanes, that group including Pam Krauss, a 15-year-old Treasure Island lass with an 18-foot boat and a 355 horsepower engine. Favored in the field of big inboard offshore types that are capable of spurts of 100 miles an hour, is Dr. Bob Ma-goon of Miami, the eye specialist who drives a Carl Kiekhaefer developed Aero-marine. 'The pair have won five races in a row." CHIEF CHALLENGERS must include Don Aronow, who developed the Cigarette hulls, in a new 36-footer with also new fuel injected Mer-cruiser engines. This involves an aside battle between the Keikhaefer products and those of the Mercury company he founded, headed, sold, headed, then left.

A favorite too will be defending champion Sandy Sa-tullo of Fairview Park, Ohio, in his 36-foot Copper Kettle. He also uses the Areomarine engines. Current world titjlst Bobby Rautbord is in it too with his Cigarette and Mercuruisers as is a new 36 foot Bertram ocean cruiser. Johnson Hook, Lyin' and Sinken Herb Allen a forefinger on open-faced spinning reel, you can become just as accurate as the hot-shots with bait casting gear. Medium-sized spinning rigs can accommodate eight to 15-pound test lines with ease, while most casting outfits use from 15 to 30-pound test line.

But, don't let this confuse you. With a properly set drag on a spinning reel and providing the surrounding waters are relatively clear of obstructions you'll put just as many fish in the cold box with spinning as you will with cast-' ing gear. Assuming that you want to buy a good, all around rod for Florida fresh or salt water fishing, what brand should you get and what will it cost? Well, first of all, there are many rod makers in the United States and, let's face it, MOTORCYCLE MECHANICS NEEDED 15,000 ANN. Those who enjoy bridge and pier fishing can usually be seen using longer and heavier spinning and casting rods, than those who fish from a boat. The theory here is a longer rod eight or nine sometimes longer aids in holding a fish away from a barnacle encrusted piling.

Also, the extra heft makes it easier to bring the piscatorial prize over the rail. But, before investing in an expensive rig for a once or twice trip to one of the piers or bridges, remember that those with lighter and more conventional tackle can land the majority of fish species they're likely to encounter during these colder months of the year. Generally, right now, the bridge and pier buff is doing well on whiting, silver trout, sheepshead, jacks, speckled trout and school-size redfish. Most of these fish will range in weight from one to five pounds, therefore, a single-handed rod with a butt of sufficient length to brace against the body when fighting a fish is a good selection. This same rod can be used on Florida's fresh waters for bass, bream, pickerel and catfish.

Or, can be utilized for light surf or causeway-type fishing, and all kinds of boat or wade fishing for most salt water species you'll run into in our waters at this time of year. Now, the rod we're talking about can be a casting rod of five and one-half to six feet in length, or a spinning rod from six and one-half to seven and one-half feet in length. Chances are it'll be ample of fiberglass, although there are some around who prefer a solid glass rod. For general all-around use the so-called medium action rod will probably offer the best service in out type of fishing. It "has sufficient "backbone" to set a hook, and, when necessary, to move a finny advasary away from an obstruction.

It's whippy tip will allow an angler to cast smaller lures and baits, as well as "play" a fish. Inexperienced anglers will probably find a spinning rod, or one designed for closed-face reels, easier to use. And, keep in mind, that many of the veteran pros also use spinning rods too. If, however, you're used to casting rods or want to take the time to become proficient with one by all means go ahead. Either the spinning or casting rod can be used with success in Florida waters as well as in fishing hotspots back home.

So, most of the rods you see in display stores and tackle shops in Florida are perfectly, capable of catching fish. i Rods can range in price from $3 for the "cheapies," to $300 for the ultra-ultra in cus-f tomized products. Frankly, I'd avoid both-extremes since the low-end stick might come apart at the inopportune time, and the high-priced offering is just too rich for my blood. My "bread and butter" rods the ones I'm most likely to grab for 95 per cent of my fishing applications can be purchased for $10 to $20.

Keep in mind now, this is for a medium-action rod for general fishing. Rods, larger and smaller, designed for specific applications, may go "higher. These prices do not include reels, and this is a subject we'll take up tomorrow. However, when 'it comes to the selection of a good all-around light-tackle fishing rod, don't be confused by claims and counter claims by so-called experts. Most being sold in reputable stores and tackle shops at a reasonable price will do the job they're intended to do.
