The Pinellas Park Police Department reconstructed the affair as follows: A car operated by Wells collided with an auto driven by Nellie Ledford, 31, Pinellas Park, near the junction of Haines Road and Park Boulevard shortly after midnight. Night Patrolman Paul Calvert picked up Chief Glenn and answered the call.

Mrs. Ledford suffered bruises and an arm injury in the crash and her six-year-old son, Clyde, received multiple lacerations and possible rib fractures. Wells, according to witnesses, complained of lee injuries and was carried to the town cruiser by Glenn and Calvert and placed on the rear seat. At this point, Glenn said, Wells jumped him and landed one damaging kick to the Chief's back, possibly seriously injuring a kidney. Glenn and Calvert subdued Wells and he was taken to Mound Park Hospital for treatment to his ters.
