22-M Oakland Tribune Sunday; Jan. 1 'I960 J' 1 A School Library Gets on Its Feet Yoor Labor is for future hours. Richard Home. Day "move in" day at a new Oakland school requires all the planning and strategy of a military operation if it's to be successful. Nowhere does the pre-planning become more important than in the For example, preparation 'of the library at the new Sobrante Park Junior High School which opens tomorrow, took more than a year.

In 1958, Jessie Boyd, director of libraries, was given $4,000 to start a basic book order, prepare for growth and coordinate the titles and contents with the curriculum. More than 6,500 textbooks covering art, industrial arts, language arts, reading, mathematics, music, science, history, geography, civics and special education were purchased as well as 2,300 individual library books, 200 reference volumes and 25 current periodicals. The last four weeks of the operation brought work under a careful timetable. First job was to set up and arrange equipment and furniture. During the second week the books were unpacked, checked, stamped and numbered.

Elmhurst Junior High School Library Club members contributed their aid the third week to assist in arranging books in shelves. Those from Elmhurst moving to the new school willjjpbably soon form a similar club at Sobrante Park. This past week the schopl library staff has worked with the principal on the routine for distribution of books and instructions'for use of the library. The payoff comes tomorrow when students start using the new services. If everything goes as planned, they'll never know it's the library's first day of operation.

No one was more interested in the library at new Sobrante Park Junior High than the parents. Here two of them from Elmhurst, Mrs. Louis Rodgers (left) and Mrs. Donald Toomey (right) look over textbooks with Sobrante librarian Alma Tillin. Am-V- (7 I i i il.n.rrwv.
