THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, Tuesday, September 29, 1970 B-B Screen Parade Crime Clan Caper Comely (MoivThurs. 7:45 I 9i45) Coll Me Mr. Tibbs" 3 1 A' J'y 4i4 rs highly entertaining and sus-penseful story. Vittorio Manalese (Jean Gabin), patriarch of a Parisian-based Mafia family, arranges for the prison escape of killer Roger Sartet (Alain Delon). After pulling this successful caper, the family looks for some bigger entertainment and finds it in the form of a jewel show in Rome's Villa Borghese.

Sartet has the crudely drawn plans of the show's layout, having procured them from a fellow prisoner, but the family with the aid and. brains of an American member of the clan plot to steal the Elvis And Friends, The Record Breakers jewels while they are in transit via jet to the United States. THE JOB requires split-second timing, cool heads and a lot of luck, and since this is a film, everything works out perfectly. The clan hijacks the plane and has the pilot set it down on an empty highway outside of metropolitan New York. The caper has been accomplished.

Although the film does not hold up completely on the real-life level, it is so finely executed by director Henri Verneuil that the audience is teased into suspending disbelief in order to enjoy the taut suspense. Jean Gabin is excellent as the papa of the clan, and Alain Delon does a good job of playing the cold-blooded killer, Sartet. The film, though rated GP (all ages admitted, parental guidance advised) is certainly not tame fare. There are enough shots of bare bosoms and behinds to warrant the rating, or, at last, to make one wish a rating level existed between the GP and the R. For this is certainly a perfect example of how the rating system breaks down every so often and fails to fulfill its intended purpose.

WYOU manager Art Reuben and Curtis Hixon Convention Center director Bill Wilson beam before a portrait of Elvis Presley while reviewing the box office, figures for Elvis' concerts and finding that the singer shattered all previous records at the center. Reuben promoted the event. Wilson said nearly 000 persons saw Presley in his two sold-out concerts Sept. 13 and collectively paid more than $107,000 for the event, the highest one day total in the center's history and higher than many extended-run attractions gross. The concert netted $10,356 in rental fees for the pity owned facility.
