Just two years ago, most of his work really was cut out in fact, almost nonexistent. Scherman started the 1969 season with the Tigers but was optioned to Toledo of the International Lague before he got in a game. AFTER 13 appearances covering 77 innings, he was recalled, only to spend most of his time on the bench, trotting to the mound only four times th rest of the season. "When they called me back, I was out of Toledo on thefirst plane," he recalls.

"I thought this was my big opportunity. But at one stretch I didn't pitch for 50-some days and after a while I didn't know which way to turn. "I couldn't figure out what it was but I knew there had to be a reason why they weren't using me. I don't know if Mayo (manager Mayo Smith) was mad at me, or what. I've NEW YORK Pitcher Carl Morton drove in two runs with a single and a home run yesterday, helping the Montreal Expos to a 12-7 victory over the staggering New York Mets.

The loss was the seventh in the last eight games for the Mets, who contributed two errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball to Montreal's attack. THE EXPOS hopped on New York starter Charlie Williams for three runs in the second inning with Boots Day's double touching off the rally. An error by Mets' third baseman Tim Foli allowed the first run to score and Morton's single drove in the second. After the Mets had bounced back to tie the score against Morton in the third when they bunched four of their hits, the Montreal pitcher led off the fourth inning with his first home run of the year, putting the Expos on top again. Singles by Ron Fairly, Rusty Staub and Day produced two more runs in the inning and restored the Expos' three-run bulge.

THE 26-year-old left-hander doesn't have much time these days to ponder the problem. He leads the American League in appearances with 40 in Detroit's first 81 games and also ranks among the leaders with 12 saves. He has a 6-3 record and 2.73 earned run average. "Things are going my way now," he admits.

"Even last year, when I got in 48 games, I was used mostly against left-handed hitters oi for a couple of innings when we were either well ahead oi far behind."
