Bill Wilford does a droll characterization of a spendthrift blade, and Glenn Wilcox is comical as the kindhearted, upright man of business The supporting cast, which is decorative if not fully vocal, includes Carol Lovern, Wendy Brophy, Joan Toniatti, Anne Haslett and Fred Kellogg. Her counterfoil is Bill Asp, who plays the title role with glassy eyed earnestness and is every bit the gentlemanly victim of the ooks.

As regularly as Mozart arrives at Salzburg, and Romberg and 1 1 at many American cities, oldtime melodrama comes to the little theaters.

It returned on schedule to Jack London Square last weekend along with the summer solstice, and will be playing there Friday and Saturday nights. Tom Taylor's 'Ticket of Leave Man" provides the vil lains, mountebanks and representatives of the pure in heart for this year's mummery by the London Players and is slightly more involved and talky than last year's offering, which makes for some difficulties. Director Ted Smalley has gone a step further in lam pooning the form by elimi nating almost all action and persuading the actors to de liver their lines in a rapid-fire monotone. They speak what sound like words but, in the mouths of some of the players, the words are totally unintelligible. however, Smal-ley's treatment is often, quite amusing and the general trend the play is not exactly mysterious.

Since others who are working currently managed to show up, this doesn't seem like much of an excuse. Actually; among all those celebrities obviously- enjoying themselves he didn't seem to be missed.

And of the several premieres I have attended, "The Vikings" proved one of the most thoroughly enjoyable, the most reminiscent of those now quite dead "good old days." lRaaa A WARWICK rtooucTioa party for the visiting press and about 150 Hollywood personalities. As visiting hosts for the proceedings which also included a pre-theater cocktail party toi invited members of the fourth estate only, start Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh (Mr. were much Ih evident, teady with answers to any questions those of us on hand- asked. Their smiles may have come from genuine good nature, but much of their happiness certainly stemmed from the fact that in "The Vikings" this trio, producer Jerry Bresler, et al, have a real money-maker in tow. Ifi a great big, highly colorful adventure story bound to reap heaps of shekels.

REVIEW DUE LATER Mote, however, about the movie itself at a later date when it opens at the Roxie for an indefinite engagement The Fox-Wilshire's relatively small lobby made it possible for stars attending the show to bask in a concentrated spotlight. Among those greeted with wild displays of enthusiasm were Jeff Hunter, Shirley MacLaine, Gregory Peck, Aldo Ray (squiring sack-costumed, very red-haired, Tina Louise) Edward G. Robinson, Jeff Chandler, Shelley Winters, Russ Tamblyn, Sessue Haya kawa, Anthony Quinn, Doro thy Malone, Sammy Davis Jr, and too many others to mention in this short space. GOWNS DESCRIBED A more varied assortment of gowns and colors could scarcely be imagined. My favorites, incidentally, were the blue and green creation worn by Esther Williams and the impressive LAST DAY!
