Ring-rose's daughter, Barbara, 12, in the Turke house. MacLachlan's two sons, Ste-evcn, 2, and James, 9 months, hid in a bedroom closet of the Turke home. They alone escaped harm. Perry Turke, 68, Mrs. Turke, 61, Cynthia Anne Ring-rose, 10, and her father, Rob-ert Ringrose, 35, were -wounded by the fusillade of .22 caliber fire.

They and Mrs. "Pepper were taken to Rome City Hospital. There, Cynthia's condition was listed critical. Turke and Robert Ringrose were in poor condition, Mrs. Turke in fair condition.

All were shot more than once. MacLachlan, who once underwent psychiatric care by a private practitioner, put a bullet through his own head as he crouched behind a stolen jeep in the hamlet of Remsen, about 10 miles from the scene of the carnage. Two state troopers had 'spotted the blue, snowplow-equipped jeep MacLachlan had stolen. They gave chase, find MacLachlan sent three shots crashing through the windshield of their patrol car. One nicked the hat of Trooper Dominick DePaola Jr.

The troopers exchanged fire with MacLachlan. Approaching carefully they found the 6-foot-2 inch, 200-pound MacLachlan dead in the snow beside the stolen jeep. He died less than five hours after the shooting began in Westernville. MacLachlan was an elder of St. John's Lutheran Evangelical Church in Rome, N.Y.

James E. MacLachlan of Rome, the dead man's brother, said he had talked with him by telephone about an hour before the shootings. "There was no indication he was acting abnormally," the brother said. He said Ralph MacLachlan was watching a New Year's Day bowl game on television at the time of the conversation. Warm felt slipper for up and around on coldest nites.
