a STATE THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, Thursday, May 25, 1967 19-A Deaths in the Tampa Area and Other West Coast Communities In Solar Study Orbit VANDENBERG AFB, Calif. (UPI) IMP-F, also known as Explorer 34, was launched into a near Polar orbit yesterday from this base. The 163-pound satellite carried a complex instrument package to measure the sun's influence on the earth. The sixth in a series of interplanetary monitoring platforms was launched at 10:06 a.m., by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. When it achieved orbit about six hours later, the satellite's designation changed from IMP-F to Explorer 34.

Upon its launching in thick fog atop a three-stage Delta Booster rocket, the satellite streaked toward a high, looping Polar orbit. Its orbital path took it as far as 133,194 miles from earth and as close as 150 miles at an inclination of 67 degrees. It will circle the earth once every 106 hours, or about four days. "The orbit is pretty close to nominal. We're happy with it," said a NASA spokesman.
