FLA. PHONE 937-6906 V. -is IUAINY AAMUU UtN- i TO COAST. i il I fc By JIM SELMAX Assistant Sports Editor Songbird Williams says he can beat Jose Polio Gabino in 10 rounds because he's a fast finisher and will prove it Thursday night at Fort Homer Hesterly Armory. Gabino, from Reynosa, scored a 6-round decision over Williams in Houston early in July.

Williams, the Memphis welterweight who'll be fighting for the fifth time in Tampa, is glad for the opportunity to redeem himself against Gabino and get back into the good graces of Tampa fight fans. HE WAS STOPPED in seven rounds by former welter champion Luis Rodriguez at the Fort in February and is 1-1-1 in his other bouts here. Although losing to Rodriguez is no disgrace, Williams apparently felt it was a setback to his rising popularity in Tampa. Whoever heard of a Life Insurance salesman who owns $1,000,000.00 of Personal Life Insurance? As for the loss to Gabino, it was all because it was over the 6-round distance and not the full 10. "In 10 I think I would have beaten Gabino," says Williams.

"I'm a slow starter. It was a mistake fighting him in a six rounder. If I had been the manager I wouldn't book it that way. I just took the fight." Williams is a slow starter and he especially proved that in his 10-round loss here to the ranked Manny Gonzalez and his 10-round draw with hard-hitting Sal Martinez, whose knockout string ended in that bout. Why this style? "I THINK A smart fighter would be a little slow," he insists.

"Sometimes the other way you get your brains knocked out. It's just my nature. A lot of champions were slow starters. Other fighters start fast, but fade early. They just fizzle out.

"Me, in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds I get going bet- ter." Williams said he'll beat Gabino. "He's sneaky and a slugger, but I'll be right with him. This is one slugger you've got to watch. He's liable to hit you anywhere." THIS ONE DOES! National Life of Vermont Insurance Co. 915 Ashley St.

Tampa, Fla. eveie X. ets World Mark i r-" Williams said he fell behind Gabino on points in the first round when Gabino decked him with a left hook. "He surprised me," he said. "I was pulling back that's a bad habit and he hit me right here," Williams said, pointing to his chin and laughing, which he does constantly.

"I jumped right up, but he got ahead of me right there and I just didn't catch up." WILLIAMS says he thinks Gabino sparred with Art Ara-gon and learned a lot from him. Songbird is 27-7-2. Gabino was 20-18-4 through 1968. Since losing here to Rodriguez, W'illiams stopped Billy Marsh in seven rounds in Canada, drew with Missouri mid-d 1 i champ Norbert Cody in St. Louis he thought he had won seven or eight rounds and lost to Gabino.

Williams flew into Tampa Friday and worked six good rounds yesterday at the Tampa Boxing Enterprises gym three with Hector McBride and one each with Edgar Torres, Jerry Hutchinson and Ronnie Garcia. Gabino will arrive here SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. 13 Nevele Pride charged through a driving rain yesterday and clipped almost two s-sconds off the world trotting record for a half-mile track. NEVELE PRIDE won the $15,000 Speedy Rodney Trot in 1:56.4 to establish his second world record within a week. The trotter last Sunday set the record for a mile track at 1:54.4 at the Indiana State Fair, besting Greyhound's 30-year-old mark.

Nevele Pride's winning time broke the record of 1:58.3 for a half-mile track. That record was set by Speedy Rodney several years ago at Yonkers. He also topped the Saratoga record of 1:59 held by Noble Victory, another Stanley Dancer star. THE RACE was held without wagering. The 4-year-old by son of Star's Price and Thankful left the field behind him taking the first quarter in 28.2 the half in 57.1 and the three quarter in 1:26.3.

A heavy rain began as Dancer brought his pride into the paddock turn the second time but it failed to slow the powerful trotter who finished 27i lengths ahead of second place Le Chance.
