It made 15 first downs to Tampa's nine, gained 169 yards rushing to the Spartan's 47 and had 258 yards total offense to the winner's 233. Only in the passing game and the punting did Tampa shine. JIM DEL GAIZO had a net 186 yards passing on his flips to John Benedetto (70 yards), Joe Sliker (41), Orndorff (36), brother John Del Gaizo (20) and halfback Bruce Brown (19). Kicker Buddy Carter punted seven times for a 43 yard average and he allowed only one punt return from his high hanging kicks. Head coach Fran Curci was happy with the win because it was a win and because the Spartans walked into a den of Huron fury pumped up by the big homecoming crowd, the stadium dedication and the thought they could prove their earlier win over Akron was no fluke.

Before the season opened, the Huron coaching staff set its sights on two games tagged the most important games of the season those against Akron and Tampa. "WE CAUGHT them sky high and they were tough," Curci said. "We did a good job defensively. They shut out our running game but sacrificed the passing defense and we were able to move the ball. "Offensively they made several great third down plays.

We just couldn't get the ball." that score, Eastern Michigan had 86 plays from scrimmage to 52 by Tampa. The pass was intercepted and the Hurons were able to get off one more play before the horn signaled the end of the game. "I WANTED to maintain the ball," Curci explained. "Our passing game was going good so I sent in the play." Tampa had the option to kickoff or receive at the start of the second half, and the choice was to kick. "At the time it seemed a good move," he said. "We had the wind at our back and we had a good kickoff man (Ron Guinto) who could kick into the end zone.

They got the ball at their own 20 and then made a great play on third down and the whole thing backfired." THE HURONS drove down to the Tampa 27 before they turned the ball back on a fourth down and 13 failed. "Let's get them all in," Curci continued with a grin. "I pulled one more dumb play. That was when we were fourth down and two inches to go on our own 30. "The reason I did it was Benedetto had caught a pass on the sidelines and the offi cials put the ball down a whole yard back of where he caught it.

It made me mad and I wanted to show them we could make it. Instead we fumbled the ball and that was that." But it didn't do the Hurons much good because after pick ing up one first down, they turned the ball over on 'a fourth down and five try. It was another of those times that the defense stood firm. "I THINK we are a superior team, but they put everything together and we were lucky to come out with a win." Defensive coach George Mac- Intyre had good things to say about his defensive team. Things like: "Starnes (Steve) was good as usual.

"Our ends did a very good job-Geatz (Kyle) and Willie Lee (Jones). "When the big play had to be made, with the score 10-7 and when they were moving the ball fast Eddie (Johnson) intercepted. "DO YOU realize that since the Akron game our defensive boys have given up only 21 points in five games?" Perhaps a turning point in the game came in the first quarter as the Hurons drove to the Tampa 11 and they called in their place kicker, Mark Okla, to try for an 18-yard field goal. Okla made the at tempt and Tampa defensive back Matt Mac Vane blocked it just enough to deflect it away from the goal posts. Had the kick been good, Eastern Michigan would have been on the scoreboard and the momentum they had al ready built would have been heightened.

"Getting on the board early is an advantage," Mac Intyre reflected. "It was really a big play for us. Mac Vane is player with great desire. Do you know I named my little boy after him? And so he did. Mac Intyre's youngest, born last Thursday night, is named Goeffrey Mat thews Mac Intyre, after Mat thew Mac Vane.

Tyson, incidentally, came to Florida State without a scholarship, but earned one last year. Zaffran had to do the same thing. Another strange thing about this football game. Cappleman completed 17 of 30 passes for 236 yards but did not throw a touchdown pass for the first time in the 14 games he has started since game No.

3 of last year. The Munroe halfback toss to Gray was called from coaching spotters in the press box. "It's a good scoring play," Pete said. "They were coming up to support fast. Gray was wide open it seems for about two minutes.

I thought he wasn't going to get the ball off. I said to myself, 'please hit MUNROE was a quarterback at Quincy High School and, of course, did everything with the football there. Doyle Pope, Quincy businessman who follows the Seminoles, said fans there have been expecting Munroe to do it all as a Seminole. "I think maybe they ought to be satis-f i with the game he played," Pope laughed. Munroe rushed 25 times for 103 yards and Tom Bailey carried 19 times for 131 as the Seminoles had 226 yards on the ground and 258 in the air.

Peterson used both boys in the same backfield for the first time this year. That was partly dictated by necessity due to an injury to fullback Brent Gilman. But the change could be permanent. It's been a long time since FSU got such a running game from two backs. BAILEY scored on a 34-yard run in the first quarter and Duane Carrell's kick made it 7-0.

Bulldog split end David Smith took a 16-yard pass from Joe Reed and Chuck Jordan's kick tied it 7-7 in the quarter. Munroe scored from the one in the second period, but Car-' rell's kick was wide. Mis-: sissippi State then took a 14-13 halftime lead as tailback Steve Whaley smacked over from the one and Jordan converted. Rest of the scoring came in the fourth period. Jordan kicked a 34-yard field goal to make it 17-13 prior to the Munroe pass to Gray.

Each team had a drive fizzle. The Dogs got to FSU's four near the half, but right safety John Lanahan of Jack sonville stopped Terry Smi-thart for a 2-yard loss on fourth down. The Seminoles marched to the four in the third period and Carrell missed a field goal. MSU QUARTERBACK Tommy Pharr, sixth in the nation in passing last year, watched from the sideline with a shoulder injury. Reed hurt his ankle in the third period and Smith had to relieve him.

Pharr and possibly Reed will be ready to play Alabama at Jackson Saturday. Seminole defensive end standout Ron Wallace was hardly able to walk yesterday morning due to a knee injury received making one of his type big plays near the end of the game. Wallace twisted the knee as he tackled Smith for a 7-yard loss. The play came at time FSU needed a defensive lift with 3:21 left. His status for the upcoming Saturday afternoon homecoming game with South Carolina is in doubt.

However, Peterson said kicker Grant Guthrie's injured hip may be well enough to permit him to play. IRONICALLY, Auburn leads the league in pass defense and Florida leads it in pass offense. Auburn hasn't yet played a team of Florida's quick-striking ability and Florida probably hasn't hit a defense like Auburn's. "We know we'll have to play like we haven't yet to win at Auburn," said quarterback John Reaves. REAVES now shares the na-tional lead in touchdown passes thrown. Both he and Mike Phipps of Purdue have thrown 20.

Reaves six-game totals are breath-taking. He has passed 203 times, has had 118 completed and the gain is a staggering 1,746 yards. ACE RECEIVER Carlos Alvarez has caught 51 of them for 876 yards. "I couldn't be more proud of this team," said Graves. "The way they come out of holes, as they did against Vanderbilt.

And, I want you to remember that some of those offensive linemen who played so well were the very ones who were pushed around by Vanderbilt a year ago (in a 14-14 tie). So, seven has been the Graves max. All-time Gator win-steak is 11, the last three in 1927 and first eight in 1928. That 8-1 record in 1928 was Florida's best ever. Graves said he isn't worried about jinxes at Auburn, just, Auburn's good football team. THE GAME is a sellout and it's Auburn's homecoming.

Auburn was edged 21-20 by Louisiana State Saturday when a John Riley's extra point try was blocked. probably will be a touchdown favorite, but Auburn won't believe that.
