As campers folded their tents and rumbling cars thrust swirls of hot dust into the air, Joseph Bunecicky, a junior high school teacher from Mon-roeville, turned from the launch pad and gazed at the crowds surging onto U.S. Highway 1. "I wonder if Columbus had this kind of send-off," he remarked. With nearly 1,000 policemen, highway patrolmen, state troopers and a waterborne state conservation patrol struggle through the night to keep traffic flowing on the highways and rivers, many tourists were directed before dawn to beaches and jetties where they spread blankets and waited. The visitors representing virtually every state and condition of life waited impatiently, even nervously, for the sunrise and the morning liftoff.

"I just sat there and admired all those stars," said Steve Jacobs, a Brooklyn College senior who wore a black felt cowboy hat and dark glasses. "I'm from Flatbush. There are no stars In Flat-bush. I guess it's pollution." vived by his parents, Mr. Marcial and Mrs.

Doieen and Following the launch, Agnew and Johnson flew by helicopter for the 15-minute ride to Patrick Air Force base and their departures aboard military planes. Other dignitaries were almost immediately engulfed in traffic jams on the roads outside the Kennedy Space Center, where cars were backed up in a line 10 miles long. Within moments after the lift-off the sweltering highways of this central Florida county turned chaotic.

On U.S. 1, west of the launch pad, and Highway 81A, along Cocoa Beach and the Bennett causeway, south of the center, a jumble of automobiles backed up traffic from 10 a.m. until late afternoon. Traffic near the space center was tied up even further with about 150 members of the poor people! campaign who marched with four mules about one mile along U.S. Highway 1 to emphasize the plight of the nation's hungry.

Despite some heckling from motorists, the marchers demonstrated peacefully for more than an hour and then left. lxiurl Ynes; granrinint. Marcial and Pura Ynes, all of Tampa; also his grandmother. Mrs. Rosario Cabrera for Mearl B.
