The Dade City Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Depot was built in 1912, paving the way for timber, citrus and tobacco industries. Dade City was changed for good. The depot shut down in 1983. The city took over the building about a decade later, renovated it and transformed the depot into office space. But in 2007, the folks at Dade City Tours Inc.

had another idea. "Everybody agreed it would be better used for historic and tourism purposes than for a corporate office," said Joey Wubbena, director of internal services for JDR Properties, which oversees DadeCityTours. Just about everyone who came Wednesday to the new Dillard's, the first new store to open at the Shops at Wiregrass, said that in so many words. She would have been standing at the door when employees opened it at 10 a.m. but she volunteers at Sand Pine Elementary School. "The minute I was finished volunteering I was here," said Glassman, who admitted she was "ready to shop." Managers estimate about 60 people visited the store when the doors opened.

The opening was known as a "soft opening," which means it isn't publicized. "It's practice," said Lisa Rice, manager of the ready to wear department. "It's to make sure everything works." In court, where Altamuro sat in his orange and white county jail jump suit with the other inmates, he looked at her too much, Johnston thought. On Wednesday, early in the hearing, he leaned back in his chair and stared. Johnston stood with a victim's advocate from the Sheriff's Office and held hands. She wiped her eyes with tissues. "I've been waiting for this," she whispered.

After the judge accepted Altamuro's guilty plea, Johnston stood in the hall outside the courtroom and said she still has followed her. On Aug. 24, 2005, Altamuro, shirtless and shaggy-haired, showed up at Johnston's pink-trimmed mobile home in New Port Richey. She dialed 911 before he even got inside. He attacked her in her bedroom on the floor by the TV and stabbed her with two steak knives in her hands, wrists, chest, neck and back.
