WHEN I WENT to the game Friday night, I saw these players on the field wearing black and red pants. I didn't know it was our team, actually, I didn't want to believe it was our team.

I didn't know if the Mavs were going to play football or perform a dance from "Swan Lake." They look awful. THE TREE ON Panola-Harrison's lot must either be endangered or a historical reference point. It is still blocking the flagpole. TO THE PERSON who is so positive Mr. Willingham is just an old man and knows nothing about the job, do you know Mr.

Willingham? How can you be so sure he knows nothing about job? He might do as good a job as anybody. Don't judge a person until you know him. WE LOVE YOU, Austin. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Papa. I WANT TO complain about these older drivers who go so slow.

If you want to go slow, why don't you take a bike to work? HAPPY BffiTHDAY Blake Edel. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Tabitha Thompson, who died on July 24, 1999. THANK YOU AND job weU done to Frankie at the McDonalds on Highway 80. She makes my day. TO THE PERSON who said they ought to change the name of the newspaper to Ebony, judging by the way some people act here, I believe that would lose the Marshall News Messenger a lot of customers. HAS ANYONE ELSE noticed what is going on in America today? Our forefathers founded this nation to have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, to pay no taxes and to be able to bear arms. Now, 223 years later, we are paying taxes, have gun control laws, our freedom of speech is in jeopardy and now we can't pray in all local places.

Doesn't it say "In God We Trust" on our money? What is wrong with this picture? Steve Cantrell BILL' LOCKWOOD NEEDS to get a Bible that tells the truth because obviously he doesn't have the right one. My Bible says in Romans that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Bill, my question to you is, how to you get to heaven? Do you not get to heaven by faith alone in Jesus Christ? Yes or no? Simple answer. CONGRATULATIONS TO Ml, and Mrs. Robert McCowan.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Shari Garrison. MY PARENTS AND my grandparents paid taxes when I was in school. I don't have kids and I pay taxes and it isn't fair. People with kids should have to pay school taxes. TO THE PERSON who said they looked on the Lifestyles page and all they saw are ebony people, what exactly is an ebony person? What difference does it make as long as their article got published? IT IS WRONG to bash the paper for printing weddings and anniversary announcements for people of color.

Ancnor t0 wed mayr NEW ORLEANS (AP) What's a local television anchor to report on when she's about to become the city's first lady? For Michelle Miller, who plans to wed Mayor Marc Morial on Saturday, the answer is simple: nothing that involves her future husband.

"We have a policy in place where as news anchor, Michelle does not write, alter or change in any way shape or form any story in her show having to do with city government," said Sandy Breland, the news director at WWL-TV, where Miller works. Miller, 31, and Morial, 41, plan to wed at the St. Louis Cathedral in the city's historic French Quarter. Miller plans to keep her last name professionally and avoid political fundraisers, rallies and other events that could create a conflict of interest with their jobs. "I can't even accept an award for Marc if he's out of town," Miller said.

IT IS A BAD idea to change the name of the newspaper to Ebony for one reason and one reason only: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'VE NOTICED ALL this controversy about prayer and I have to wonder what God they are praying The God I serve you are supposed to help mankind, but, here lately, whenever I need help I have to pay someone. NEC0 to consult on show NEW YORK (AP) Things appear to be harmonious between the makers of "The Sopranos" and the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, thanks to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

The mayor, a fan of the show, brokered a deal that brought HBO officials together with "Sopranos" critic William Fugazy, chairman of the NECO, on Wednesday. "I just made them an offer neither side could refuse," Giuliani said Thursday. Fugazy had charged the Emmy-nominated program, which portrays a northern New Jersey mob family, was chock-full of negative characterizations of Italian-Americans. He called for a demonstration outside HBO's Manhattan headquarters on Sunday the same day the Emmys are awarded in California. According to Fugazy, HBO executives agreed to have members of Fugazy's group provide script consultation focused on ways that highlight positive contributions of Italian-Americans.

HBO spokesman Henry Gomez said only that the meeting went well. "We all agreed," Gomez said, "it's a good show." Judge gags McEwan's ex LONDON (AP) A judge has barred the ex-wife of Ian McEwan from talking publicly about a bitter custody battle over the couple's two sons. The gag order against Penny Allen, 51, and her fiance, Ismay Tremain, was necessary to keep them from disclosing sensitive information about court proceedings and making allegations against her ex-husband via the media and Internet, Justice Bernard Charles said Thursday. The ruling followed a hearing on Tuesday for which Ms. Allen and Tremain showed up to the High Court wearing gags.

It was the latest chapter in a dark tale that began in July when McEwan, 51, who won Britain's Booker Prize for his novel "Amsterdam," was granted sole custody of the boys. Originally, the couple shared custody when their marriage ended in 1995. WHY DOES THE school system have to hire a Head Start teacher for 3-year-olds when there is already a classroom set up for 3-year-olds with only three morning children and one afternoon child. Why does the superintendent allow such a waste? WHY NAME OUR newspaper Ebony? Why not name it Ebony and Ivory, since we all subscribe and pay to have photos and some articles published..
