4B Tuesday, December 5, 2000 THE MONITOR, McAllen, Texas FOOTBALL HIGH SCHOOLS: District 31-5A Donna, McHi dominate all-district selections The Monitor "He was our defensive leader all year," Evans said of the senior. "He's started 34 games for us and I can't say enough about him, about his commitment and his athleticism." Another three-year starter, McAllen High quarterback Sky Cook, was named Offensive MVR The senior led the Bulldogs to a second-place finish in district and an 1 1 -2 record, making it to the third round of the playoffs before losing to San Antonio Marshall after the Redskins went 10-0, 7-0 in district for their first outright district title since 1978, when they won 16-3A. The Redskins finished 11-1, beating Brownsville Hanna 49-0 in bi-district before losing a 7-6 regional playoff to Corpus Christi Carroll. "I think we had an awesome season," Evans said. "I can't say enough about the way the kids played this season.

Going 10-0 was a goal we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season. Everybody in the state of Texas starts the season believing they can go 10-0, but it's a hard feat. "We went through a lot of tough and trying times. The only goal we didn't reach was going three-deep in the playoffs and we missed that by an extra point." The defense probably was the biggest reason for the team's success, as the Redskins allowed only 66 points in 12 games, and allowed only 152 yards a game in the regular season. Middle linebacker Mike Gonzales led the defensive squad and was named Defensive MVP.

The Bulldog's all-time passing leader threw for 1,657 yards and 15 touchdowns this season and rushed for 1,1 03 yards and 1 5 more touchdowns. "He's done a great job for us," McHi coach Tony Harris said. "Athletically, I don't think I've coached a better quarterback. When he was a sophomore, he made some sophomore mistakes, but he played much better last year and improved further this year. He grew up with the rest of the guys and all of the seniors did a great job." Donna and McAllen High were the Rio Grande Valley's top teams this season, starting out ranked No.

1 and No. 2 and staying there. The two teams were also first and second in the District 3 1-5 A standings and got a good deal of the recognition when the All-District team was released. Robinson to miss final three games LAKE FOREST, 111. As if the Chicago Bears needed anything else on their list of woes, now they'll have to play their last three games without Marcus Robinson. The team's leading receiver will miss the rest of the year because of a bulging disc in his lower back, head trainer Tim Bream said Monday. Robinson, a Pro Bowl alternate last year, doesn't need surgery, but his back will take about eight weeks to heal. Player: Georgia fires coach Jim Donnan ATHENS, Ga.

Georgia football coach Jim Donnan was fired Monday after a 7-4 season that started with the Bulldogs ranked No. 10, a team source told The Associated Press. The source, a player emerging from a team meeting and speaking on condition of anonymity, said Donnan told the Bulldogs he had been dismissed. The university scheduled a late afternoon news conference to discuss the "status of the UGA football program." TUCSON, Ariz. John Mackovic, who said he was retiring from coaching after being fired at Texas three years ago, agreed to a five-year contract to replace Dick Tomey as head coach at Arizona.

Mackovic, 57, was a television analyst for the past two years. "The TV gig was nice, but it wasn't coaching. It didn't have the same feeling of coaching," Mackovic said. Athletic director Jim Liven-good said he first talked to Mackovic eight days ago and the two worked out their agreement during meetings in Phoenix last week. Ex-Packer Chmura to go to trial Jan.

23 WAUKESHA, Wis. The sexual assault trial of former Green Bay Packers star Mark Chmura will begin Jan. 23 and is expected to last a week to 10 days. Jurors will be drawn from outside Waukesha County, Judge Mark Gempeler said Monday. He has not said where the jurors will come from, District Attorney Paul Bucher said.

Gempeler most likely will select a pool of jurors and mail them a questionnaire, Bucher added. Chmura has pleaded innocent to charges of child enticement and sexual assault. Authorities have accused the 31 -year-old player of assaulting a 17-year- i. a The Associatea Press Heisman Hopeful: Texas Christian University tailback LaDainian Tomlinson (5) escapes University of Texas-El Paso linebacker Camar Jackson, center, and defensive lineman Samuel Clarke (71) and runs for a first down on Nov. 18, at Fort Worth.

Tomlinson is ranked sixth on the NCAA career list with 5,263 yards and eighth with 54 rushing TDs, and has broken ever major running record at TCU. TCU back Tomlinson among Heisman Trophy candidates By STEPHEN HAWKINS The Associated Press Heisman Continued from page IB fourth-best in NCAA history and came after his junior season that included a I-A single-game record with 406. "He has done everything he had to do to have a chance to win the Heisman," said his coach, Dennis Franchione, who last week accepted the Alabama job. "He was the unfortunate benefactor in a way of an offense that broke the school scoring record and a defense that was No. 1 in the nation," he said.

"So there were some lopsided games and we took him out. Had we left him in, he might have 2,500 yards today." TCU's defense allowed just 106 points this season. Tomlinson alone scored 132 with his school-record 22 rushing TDs. If Tomlinson wins the Heisman on Saturday night, he would be only the second TCU player to do so, joining Davey O'Brien, who won in 1938 when the trophy was awarded for the fourth time. Three other Horned Frogs have finished among the top five in the voting, the last being Kenneth Davis 16 years ago.

Tomlinson is ranked sixth on the NCAA career list with 5,263 yards and eighth with 54 rushing TDs, and has broken ever major running record at TCU. Going into the Dec. 20 Mobile Alabama Bowl, he has a streak of 14 straight 100-yard games including six games with at least 200 yards. Only Tomlinson and Ricky Williams, who won the 1998 Heisman at Texas, had 2,000 yards in a single season and 5,000 in their careers. But even as he was placing his name among the best college runners in history, Tomlinson's biggest moment didn't come until his last regular-season game.

And it wasn't because he broke the barrier with 174 vards in a 62-7 victory at SMU. For the first time, his entire immediate family watched him play. His mother, father (divorced from his mother since 1986), older sister and younger brother (LeVar, a freshman defensive end at Sam Houston State) sat together. It reminded LaDainian of the Sunday afternoons when he was a little boy and the family would gather together to watch football. FORT WORTH LaDainian Tomlinson played quarterback in his first football game at age 9.

He quickly showed that wasn't his natural position. "He took off running and ran all the way to the end zone," his mother, Lorene Chappell, said. Now 12 years later, Tomlinson is the nation's leading rusher for the second year in a row and the non-quarterback among the four finalists for the Heisman Trophy. "We knew he was a football player. Besides, he slept with his football every night," Chappell said.

"Had that football not gone flat, I believe he'd still be sleeping with it." While he might not sleep with a football any more, Tomlinson is better than ever at running with one tucked under his arm. In his only two seasons as the featured back at Texas Christian, Tomlinson ran for 4,008 yards and led the nation both years. His 2,158 yards this year were the ahead of other contenders. Brees, a finalist last year, is the Big Ten's career passing leader ith 1 1 ,5 1 7 yards and led Purdue to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1966. He threw for 3,393 yards this season with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and he also ran for 516 yarJs and five more TDs.

Heupel led Oklahoma to the No. 1 ranking in the country, completing 256 of 389 passes for 3,172 yards with 18 touchdowns and 1 1 interceptions. He has at least one TD pass in all 24 of his career games at Oklahoma and has passed for more than 300 yards in 14 of them. Weinke led the nation with 4,167 passing yards with 33 TD passes and 1 1 interceptions. He 32-2 as a starters at Florida State with a streak of 25 consecutive victories.

He holds Atlantic Coast Conference records for passing yardage at 9,789 and touchdown passes with 79. At 28, he would be the oldest to win a Heisman. Tomlinson led the nation in rushing for the second consecutive year and became only the seventh back in NCAA history to run for 2,000 yards in a season. He carried 369 times for 2,158 yards fourth highest in NCAA history and 22 touchdowns. His 5,263 career yards is sixth highest in NCAA history.
