school security guard has been charged with possession ot 284 grams of cocaine Alvaro Peha 29 was arrested by a Texas Depai tincnt of Public Safe ty officer at about 6:30 pm Tues day eb 16 DPS Sgt Liurencio Saenz Jr confirmed Monday Pena and a cousin 32 year old Noe Pena Jr were stopped in a 1992 Chevrolet Suburban alter a ltigh steed chase by US Border Patrol agents and the DPS trooper Saenz said One of the men allegedly threw a bag containing the cocaine out ol the Suburban's window before they were stopped just cast of Garcias ville on Highway 83 Saenz said Both suspects were arraigned be fore Justice of the Peace Jose Adan Garcia the following day Alvaro Pella was suspended from his job the day after the arrest and fired Monday Superintendent Ruben Saenz said "We are disappointed anytime this sort of thing Saenz said Monday "We took the action we felt was nccessaiy As of today lie is terminated" Saenz said he was not aware of any charges that Pena had sold drugs to students Then we have to look at other alternatives like taxes or passing a bond issue" he said A Valley Interfaith meeting to discuss gangs and police protection is planned for 7 pm March 2 in the home of Maria de la Luz Her nandez first block of Sylvia Circle lais Brisas Subdivision A second meeting is set for 7 pm March 3 at the home of Ruben Rios 222 Iwticia St to dis cuss procedures necessary to estab lish street right of way Computers Continued trorn page ID such an immportanl part of what we do and what be doing in the The computers are to go to 16 schools: 14 elementary schools plus two junior highs and the Teenage Parent Alternative Program A total of 434 computer work stations will be added cither to up grade existing labs or open up new ones Most schools already have com puters of some kind said Sylvia Rutiaga the coordinator for instructional technology But not every school campus has a set of computers combined in labs making them widely available to students she said The computer purchases are a major step in putting into place the five year technology plan The plan was mandated by the stiite government and approved last spring School principals teachers and even students were involved in testing out equipment belore deci sions were made on what to buy The Board of Trustee accepted bids from three different companies for the labs: IBMEduQuest Com puter Curriculum Corporation and jostens The bids are for five year lease to purchase agreements Two different kinds of equip ment are to be purchased about $206873 worth of the Writing to Read program and $2 million worth id' Integrated Learning Sys tems Computer Labs Writing to Read uses computer ized activities to help leach kinder garten and first grade students to write Integrated Learning Systems give instruction in language arts and mathematics reinforcing and expanding on lessons students get from their teachers Rutiaga said officials hope to have all the computer labs in place by the beginning of school in the fall Schools to get computer labs: Bonham Elementary is to have a lab upgraded with 10 new sta tions Seguin Elementary will expand an existing lab adding four sta tions and gain 20 stations in a new lab Ten stations will be added al both Jackson and Escandon el ementary schools Austin Elementary will gain 16 stations Thigpen Elementary will gain 21 stations Roosevelt Elementary will gain 56 stations Crockett and ields elementary schools will gain 28 stations each Garza Milam and Rayburn el ementary schools and Morris Junior High will gain 32 stations each Gonzalez Elementary will gel 30 stations The Teenage Pregnancy Alter native Program will gel eight more stations to upgrade an existing lab Wilson Elementary will get 14 more stations Lincoln Junior High School will gain 48 stations Bids for equipment and software at Lamar Junior High and McAu liffe Elementary are still pending.
