The two teen-agers traded 36 strokes, scrambling from side to side in a baseline rally so breathtaking that it left Martina Hingis panting and leaning against the back wall. The point ended when Hingis swatted a forehand long. That gave upstart Serena Williams two-match points at 15-40, 3-5 in the third set of their thriller Tuesday at the Lipton Championships. "I didn't feel very well in my skin," Hingis admitted. But the top-ranked Swiss Miss escaped unscathed with some controversial help from a trainer and edged Williams 6-3, T-6, 7-6 (7-4) in the quarterfinals.

Carolina, Gilbert close CHARLOTTE.

N.C. Defensive tackle Sean Gilbert, who sat out the 1997 season in a dispute with the Washington Redskins, reached agreement Tuesday on a contract with the Carolina Panthers. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, although Carolina earlier tiad offered Gilbert a package in the range of $6 million per season. The Panthers announced the move one day after a ruling kept Gilbert from becoming a free agent. The Panthers said Tuesday evening that although they had agreed on financial terms with Gilbert, the team had yet to work out a compensation package suitable to the Redskins.

Gus Sunseri, Gilbert's agent, said he didn't anticipate that the compensation would be a major stumbling block. 1. Brad Stiles: 2. Craig Randall: Michael Burbach; 4. Ronald Curry, considered the nation's top high school quarterback, will be going to North Carolina, where he also plans to play basketball.

The Hampton High School star said Tuesday he signed his football letter of intent last week. He had given a nonbinding commitment to Virginia in September. "I feel North Carolina will suit me better as a football and basketball player, and as a person as well," he said. The last North Carolina athlete to play significantly on the football and basketball teams was Charles Waddell in the 1970s. Octavus Barnes, a star wide receiver, was a basketball reserve in the 1994-95 season.

Curry intends to start the season with the football team, then switch to basketball when practice starts. He said he's not interested in playing defensive back but' would consider playing wide receiver or on special teams. Longtime announcer Scott, 78, dies MINNEAPOLIS Ray Scott's booming, baritone voice is what people remember. "A voice that resonated," said Lee Remmel, director of public relations with the Green Bay Packers. "Everything he said sounded like it was chiseled in stone." Remmel was a Green Bay sportswriter when Scott was the voice of the Packers on CBS television in the 1950s and 1960s.

Scott, who later announced Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings games for WCCO radio in Minneapolis, died Monday at a Minneapolis hospital after a long illness. He was 78. Scott announced Packers games from 1 956-67. Former Packer linebacker Ray Nitschke, also of that era in Green Bay football, died March 8 of a heart attack at 61. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m.
