Section TAMPA, FLORIDA, SUNDAY, OCT. 7, 1962 -is half and it was these aerials which set up or scored the Duke touchdowns. Florida had been 7 for 7 in the first half. In this wild offensive show, a total of 762 yards were rolled up by the two teams combined, 399 for Duke and 353 for Florida.

The Devils not only banged the Gators on the scoreboard, but physically, and this may have been a factor. A Gator team different from the one which bowed 17-0 to Georgia Tech last week made the Gator Bowl Hell for the Devils in the first half, storming to an unbelievable 21-0 lead. But tbe same team which bowed last week played the second half when the Devils rushed and passed over them for 28 points in a wild one that was all offense, for both sides. Fantastic as it sounds, Florida scored all of its 21 points in five minutes and 41 seconds of the all-Gator second quarter while Duke scored all of its in 19 minutes of the third and fourth, as 30,000 watched.

Again, it was passing that sealed Florida's doom. The points on Duke's pitchfork, quarterbacks Walt Rappold and Gil Garner, hit 10 for 10 in the second V. ready there. The Gators would have beaten Ohio State in the second quarter. That as when senior quarterback Tom Shannon passed 21 yards to end Sam Holland for the first score, sophomore Dupree broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run and fullback Jim O'Donnell bucked for a third.

TD from the Duke 2 after Batten's passed had gotten the Gators that far. In each case, sophomore Jimmy Hall kicked the placements and all the Gator alumni in the world must have wished they'd been there. Why, 21 at the half, an insurmountable lead, it seemed. Then Duke's twin quarterbacks began to hit. They'd missed badly In the first.

McNeese then Tampa's Spartans failed to capitalize on a major break in the last minute last night at Phillips Field and had to settle for a frustrating 10-10 tie with McNeese.

Some 6,000 watched the Spartans' Ron Brett jar punt loose from the Cowboys Lloyd Guillot's hands with Dick O'Brien recovering "at the McNeese 26 to no vail. After three unsuccessful passes Kevin Hurt tried went to the air without success and lost the ball on downs with about 25 seconds to go. However, Tampa failed to call time out to stop the clock and couldn't get off a single play. The tie gave Tampa an 0-2-1 record. The Cowboys are now 1-1-1.

The Cowboys made the most halfback Mark Leggett to bull over from the two early in the third period and even though an aerial went for two points to make it 21-8, there was little worry in the Gator camp. Happened Fast Ever so quickly, fourth down punting situations led to two more last Duke scores. A bad snap gave the ball to Duke, and Gainer hit lonesome end Pete Widener on a 33-yard beauty over Hagood Clarke's head for the second score to make it 21-14. after the placement conversion try failed. A blocked Clarke punt set up the third TD and bull-like Mike Curtis rammed over from the two for this score.

Coach Bill Murray went for a single point and the 21-21 tic then because better than a quarter remained. The fourth touchdown was entirely legitimate, coming on a 60-yard drive. Curtis got this one too, from the two, to cap a line day. Bill Reynolds kicked the point to make it final 28-21 for Florida was never again in the game, not really. Both coaches must have been as upset as the spectators.

Without Words AH Florida's Ray Graves could manage was: "We got beat by a good offensive football team. We'll be back next week for Texas Murray's post game comment was equally puzzling. "Coming back like that was not out of the ordinary for us," he said, from a state of shock. Researchers will have a time recalling a Duke team that recovered from a 21 point deficit to win. Those same researchers are still looking for the Gator record matching the second quarter show here which produced those 21 points in less than six minutes.

The Gator offensive strategy very nearly paid off. This was to move Shannon -as quarterback of the Big Blue (two-wayi unit, replacing a bandaged Larry Libertore, who played a little defense yesterday: and, to use Batten more with the Go 'offensive) unit, Bobby Dodd on defense. Shannon Calls It Shannon's pass-run threat sparked the second Gator score. Shannon's strike to Holland led to the first touchdown, Batten handed off to Dupree on that 70-yard scoring maneuver and then Batten's passing sparked the drive that got the third touchdown. Dodd meanhwile, intercepted one pass behind the Gator goal to stop a late Duke threat after he had batted one down at the goal much earlier.

It was the defense, on the ground and in the secondary of a pass interference infraction called on Ron Perez and a 31 yard pass play from Richard Guillory to Dick Willett for a touchdown early in the first period. Willett took the toss at the Tampa 15 and made it down to the one before banging through the left side of the Spartan line for the score. Billy Dove converted.
