coach of year honors By ROY HESS The Monihr Humberto Vela arid Joe Gaspar were teammates on lhe Pan Ameri can University soccer squad in ihe late '70s Both played defender Gaspar was a starter Vela came off the bench and saw considerable action Current University of Texas Pan American soccer coach loy Moran was a midfielder on that team which was coached by Reggie Treadaway Vela and Gaspar crossed paths again when they became head soccer coaches at Valley high schiHtls Vela at La Joya and Gaspar at lidinburg North Each entered the season as a first year head coach Vela guided the Coyotes to their first District 32 5A soccer champi onship while Gaspar directed to Cougars to the state playoffs as the 32 5A runner up La Joya has played soccer for several years North was in its first season of UIL competition this year or their cfloits Gaspar and Vela were chosen as co coaches ol the year on he Mmiihir's 1992 All Area Soccer Team "We're good friends we tty to help each other Gaspar said "Both of us were at Pan Am and now nice that we're both coaches of the year" Vela said he Iregan to develop a greater interest in soccer during his time at Pan American "It's kind of nice to see the same former teammates both be come coaches ami wind up with the two best teams in the distiict" he said La Joya finished 19 5 1 alter losing 3 1 to San Antonio Marshall last weekend in the aiea playoffs North was eliminated by San Anto nio Jay 3 2 also in the area round and wound up with a 14 12 record The MVP ol the all area team was center forward Hotnero Mares a senior standout for
