Kenn Luebke, Racine, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Gilland, Neighbor Fencepost Students 'gave my mother her dignity' To the editor: You can read in the newspapers any given day about the things that young adult males do that are wrong, but I think it is necessary to announce the help that a group of Fremd High School students gave to an elderly lady. The Fremd men's swim team donated their time efforts recently to the community paint-a-thon. These students and volunteers did more than I ever expected.

My mother's house had peeling paint, weeds overgrowing the front and basically needed a lot of tender loving care. Since my father passed away, the house needed a lot more than my mother could afford to have done, and a lot more than I could do myself. These students gave my mother more than just their efforts and a beautiful house. They gave my mother back her dignity. Her house looks better than it has for many years.

The students scraped, primed, painted and planted flowers. These men worked for hours in the sun, doing what we could not do ourselves. The words THANK YOU seem to express so little to Arlington Heights. Carlos Lorenzo Rugliancich IV, Aug. 27, to Carlos and Becky Rugliancich, Rolling Meadows.

I would also like to thank Valspar Paint for donating the paint the students used, Garibaldi's pizza for donating pizzas for the students to eat and Landscaping for volunteering to remove the weeds from the front of the house. It is really a community of volunteers who came together to make this happen.

Thank you one and all. Your efforts will not be forgotten. Every time we look at the house, we will be reminded of your kindness. Shirley Kobler To the editor: I have had the good fortune to be involved in many events in our community, but never before have I been so impressed by a committee as I was by the Barrington High School students who spearheaded Saturday night's "Stomp the Stigma' for H.E.R.E. (Help-Encouragement-Resources-Education) to promote positive mental health.

David F. Nelson Barrington Bike overpass too frivolous these days To the editor: I can't believe I'm the only one upset about the recent Elk Grove Villager fall mailing regarding the Busse Woods overpass. The first article on the front page tells of a recent federal grant awarded to Elk Grove for a bike overpass at the Higgins Road and I-290 intersection. I'm not quarreling about the need of the overpass per se but the price involved! The grant is for $444,600 and only for the design and engineering. That's just obscene at a time when federal funds are so desperately needed for more other worthy projects.

Local food banks, college and junior college training and counseling for unemployed and underemployed individuals, emergency funds for legitimate hardship cases are Rick Kelley: 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12., Hoffman Estates Branch Library, 1550 Hassell Road. entertainer presents free shows that channel children's energy in a positive, fun and silly way.

(847)-781-2606. just a few that come to mind and there are probably many more agencies the could assist the general public and the real needy in this bad economy. They would love to be part of this federal grant program. What really scares me is, if it's $444,600 just to engineer and design the overpass, what will the build cost be? My guess it will be over a million dollars. In my mind this is totally an obscene project for this delicate time when federal funds could be more effectively used elsewhere.

If little Elk Grove Village, IL. can swing a deal like this, just how many other questionable federal grants are out there in the rest of the 50 states? Come on people, wake up and smell the coffee. Let your feelings be known to your government peoples and representatives. I did get a small smile when reading the end of the bike federal grant article. It said the interlinking of the Busse Woods trail to the Illinois Prairie Path and the Fox River Trail will generate more visitors than Yellowstone National Park annually.

I don't think so! Ron Leaf Elk Grove Village Read to Rover: 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 13, 20 and 27, Palatine Public Library District, 700 N. North Court. Children in grades two-five can experience reading to special therapy dogs.

Paul of the Cross, 320 S. Washington Park Ridge, with the burial taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The procession will depart the Ryan- Parke Funeral Home at 10 a.m. to the final destination at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.

Mickey Paluch's personal lifelong commitment to the church has been inspiring and remarkable. In keeping with her spirit, the J.S. Paluch Company, a major national religious publisher providing the Catholic community with worship aids, inspirational music, Sunday bulletins, calendars and computer software, shares its resources with parishes across the country. The Paluch Family Foundation was established by Mickey in 1995 and funds liturgy, stewardship and vocations projects. Award recipients are chosen for their witness to the gospel and service to the church and their community.

In particular, the area of church vocations held a special place in Mickey's heart and was a primary focus of her personal commitment. In 1985, she established the company's National Vocation Awareness Division, which supports vocation ministry in the church and underwrites an annual national vocation seminar. In recognition of her devotion to vocation ministry, the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC) presented its John Paul I Award to Mickey in 1987. In 1989, the National Conference of Diocesan Vocation Directors (NCDVD) bestowed its Stewardship Award on Mickey and, in 1995, established the Margaret A. Paluch Award in her honor.

This award is given to individuals who make outstanding contributions to vocation ministry. Mickey had been a member of FATICA, an organization that supports vocation ministry. She often contributed her time and resources to fundraising for the archdiocese and for religious orders, and had personally given financial assistance for seminary study costs. In 1991, Mickey established the Endowment for the Margaret and Chester Paluch Chair of Theology at the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein in support of that effort.

In 2007, Mickey received the Pope John Paul Seminary Leadership Award from the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) Seminary Department in recognition of her distinguished service to Roman Catholic seminaries in the United States and Canada. Marianist Brother Bernard F. Stratman, executive director of the NCEA Seminary Department remarked, "In presenting the award to a lay woman, the department affirms the qualities of creativity, leadership and service of individuals who contribute to the development of effective priestly formation programs in the U.S. This award honors the memory and the legacy of Pope John Paul II." The most durable of Mickey's legacies can be seen in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Mickey instilled a love and appreciation of music.

In the words of her family members, "For most of her family and friends, the most vivid memory is Mickey with a microphone in her hand, poised in front of a piano, belting out Now, Mickey is singing in a more heavenly venue." In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Paluch Family Foundation, Mary L. Rafferty, J.S. Paluch 3708 River Road, Suite 400, Franklin Park, IL 60131.
