20-Feb. inci "Miss America" Still Prefers Love to Career in Hollywood MEMPHIS. wood is still hounding Miss America of 1947 but the' tall Tennessee beauty persistently declines all offers, because "lore is more important." "I only want to be a successful doctor's wife," says the nation's beauty queen, Barbara Jo Walker. This continues to amaze movieland and thousands of screen hopefuls. Barbara's latest rejection slip went to David O.

Selznick who asked her to discuss a contract witlThim in New York, all expenses paid, of course. The producer received a court- eons reply of refusal to this effect: simply not interested." Eer attitude is simple and, the way Barbara tells it', quite convincing: "I hare no-desire to lead the type of life that you must in Hollywood. I have my own ideals and prirate life is what counts." Barbara, made no effort to capitalize on the Miss America title. Although she averages about four personal appearances weekly, these are generally charity connected. She has signed no advertising endorsements.

"Why did she enter the contest? Only for the $5000 scholarship fund. That award may be employed for aay educational purpose. Last month she used some of the money to buy a piano to help with her music studies. She also will take graduate study in French and English through the fund. Despite the many trips she's called on to shows, carnivals, charity manages to keep pace with, college classes at Memphis State here.

Taking books on the trips helps and, ahe explains, "I got ahead (through summer courses). Now It's easy." Currently Barbara has a schedule calling for nine hours weekly study. The busy beauty finds time, too, for sorority work and rolfs in dramatic productions. Her interest in the stage goes no further. She plans to teach school after she's gradnated this spring.

Later she'd like to become that "successful doctor's He's John Hummel, of Charleston, who recently completed medical school at the University of Tennessee here. There's Just no place on the program for Hollywood. From This Very Unusual Winter Even Weathermen's Head Aches By HARMAN W. NICHOLS WASHINGTON (U.E) Yes, indeed, this has been a most unusual winter. A town in Louisiana was ice-locked.

California suffered from the worst drought in 50 years and Florida had to haul out the smudge pots to warm up the lemon trees. In Alaska, the army wanted to try out some new cold weather equipment but a heat wave butted in. Thirty- eight above. New Tork became one big igloo when 25 inches of snow gave the city the whitest Christmas week in man's memory. It doesn't make sense and what's the answer7 Is it the 20-year cycle? Sun spots? Is if the misery or something or other kicked up by the atom bomb? Who The weather bureau? Or Is it mixed up too? So I've spent a lot of time bothering the head weatherman to find out how they work and what they think about it all.

The weather big, national housed In a cluster of buildings out near the Georgetown section of Washington. That's where the brain work Is done. The bureau has $20,000,000 a year to spend on forecasting weather we'll have pea-planting or overshoe weather here and there tomorrow and next week. The weather man Is bated and loved by turns, according to how accurate he is. Such a man is Ivan Tannehlll, In charge of reports and forecasts.

He and his colleagues receive forecasts and rain and snotr measurements from all over the country every day on a vast network of teletypes going ciackety-clackjpn a couple of floors of one of the build- Ings. They sew all of these together into a daily weather they forecast. Sometimes they hit Sometimes, like when the wind changes, they miss. Only 4000 of the 11,000 weathei bureau emolpyes get pay checks. The other TOoO are volunteers, people who are civic minded.

The bureau sets them up in their hobby by providing them with instruments, like rain gauges and thermometers which stick on the upgrade to record the high temperature and clog down low to give the minimum during the past 24 hours. The Gorernmeni provides a shelter for the instru ments too. In the big league there are 400 major stations or "first order stations," as they are called. They make complete observations with, complicated instruments like radio- sondes (instruments tied to balloons which go up and radio back atmospheric conditions). These professionals are members of the bureau's first team.

They send their stuff in every few hours, coded. The dog- gondest code you ever saw. At the last international weather conference delegates from around the world argued for three weeks about It being too complicated. They revised it Now it's so complicated that even some of tbe experts can't de-cipher if without help from the code That, sir, is science. But Tannehill, a pleasant little gray-haired man who rolls his own cigarettes, says that we oughtn't to make fun of grandad and bis bnnion forecasts.

Ctl. 29; Stand. Oil of POLICE SAVE BULLET COSTS Continued From Page Seven city yards, is maintained by mem berg of the department on their off time, under the leadership of Lieu tenant Charles Dodge. A new range now being constructed on a site near Truxtun avenue and Oak streets, and when completed will provide more practice shooting facilities than the present range, which is limited by the sice of the yard. Officers still point to a piece of a gun which is lodged in the ceiling of the shooting stand at the range, and laugh as they recount the only accident which ever occurred at the range.

The accident occurred shortly after the department secured the bullet reloading machine, and was caused by an overcharge of powder being placed in a shell, a mistake attributed to nnfamiliarity with the machine's operation. When the officer, who was not injured, fired the bullet, his gun disintegrated in his hand, leaving him holding the handle. Tbe hapless officer had his gun replaced by the department snd, understandably enough, did not show up at tbe range for some time. NEW YORK STOCK CLOSE Furnished by S. F.
