For the Star The Kiwanis Club of Nanaimo Sun-risers recently held its installation ceremony at the Black Bear Pub. Newly elected club officers are: Hans DeFrel, president, Ruth McWhinnie, vice-president, Robert Capstick continues as secretary and treasurer, Bruno Tonolli becomes past president. Club directors are: Noel Roke-by, Betty Trites and Thea Vanden-berg. Two new members, Jim Scant-land, Div.

15 past Lt. Governor and his wife Doreen. Master of ceremonies was DeFrel while Trites proposed a toast to the Queen. Noel Rokeby proposed a toast to the office of the president of the United States. James Scantland proposed a toast to the office of Prime Minister of Canada while Vanden-berg proposed a toast to spouses and partners which was replied to by Shirley Rokeby.

The invocation was presented by Robert Capstick with DeFrel introducing the head of the table and all guests. A buffet followed. Bruno Tonolli introduced John Garenkooper, school board chairperson for School District 68. Mike O'Connor, co-sponsor at Staples for "School Bus" program collecting donated school supplies for distribution to needy students. Alicia Dewar, a public health nurse spearheading The Child Car Seat Safety program, with Wal-Mart and Kiwanis Sunris-ers.

Mary Wynans, a Div. 15 past Lt. Governor from Port Alberni, presented a Distinguished Club President award to co-winners Glenda Godard and Bruno Tonolli. New Div. 15 Lt.

Governor, Greg Holland, installed new officers and directors. Member Andy Laidlaw described how Sunrisers had initiated the successful yellow school zone signs which have been adopted throughout B.C. and elsewhere. Ruth McWhinnie was awarded the Distinguished Secretary for 20002001 and also the Best Kiwanian 20012002 award. An appreciation award was presented to Staples employee Mike O'Connor.

Stewart White, Legion of Honour recipient, was the most senior Kiwanian present. John Garenkooper thanked Sun-risers for their community service. President DeFrel remarked on many successful club projects and goals. Tonolli passed the club gavel to DeFrel. Balloons and Bears provided the flowers and decorations.

Betty Trites and Robert Capstick were presented appreciation awards for service at bingos. Trites also received a past president's Distinguish award. Kiwanians in the Pacific Northwest District have completed their helmet safety program and will now assist MADD (Mother's Against Drunk Driving) to prevent drunk driving.
