Bent is not for everybody, but it should be. Sean Mathias' screen adaptation of Martin Sherman's award-winning 1979 play about Nazi persecution of homosexuals intrudes upon the Season of Good Cheer like a jackboot to the face. It demands we remember evil, with many stark images of pain and suffering. But it also shows ways of creating love that transcend mortality. In this way, it's a very fitting Christmas movie.

Mathias also directed the stage version of Bent, and he's made few accommodations to wide-screen spectacle. The second half of the movie particularly betrays its stage origins, being set in a concentration camp quarry where tedium threatens to overwhelm the senses. This is history stripped to its bare essentials. The exquisite acting of this lean cast, notably Quebec's Lothaire Bluteau (Jesus Of Montreal and Britain's Clive Owen as Dachau prisoners Horst and Max, lets the difficult subject reach the emotions as well as the intellect. There are also fine cameos by Mick Jagger, who as Berlin drag queen Greta seems not far removed from his rock fantasies, and Ian McK-ellen, who played Max in the original play, but here creates Max's still-closeted Uncle Freddie.

The story opens on June 30, 1934, the start of Hitler's persecution of homosexuals. It's the infamous Night than physical and bravery is more than fighting.
