LEE Tlmii Stiff Wrltr CLEARWATER When the Humane Society of Pinellas' longtime executive director left abruptly and mysteriously last month, shelter employees and volunteers knew changes would follow. Some even hoped that with a new set of eyes, the many dogs, cats and a few goats cared for at the shelter also would benefit But seven weeks later, the changes are getting mixed reviews. Bill Mazurek, a 10-year volunteer and seven-year Humane Society board member, is working as the shelter's unpaid interim director. In the, month since Mazurek, 55, took over from Rick Chaboudy, the organization has brought back a former veterinarian and changed the way kennels are disinfected to improve animal care, he said.

It also is looking at other policies and plans to bring in an animal behaviorist "Change itself may be difficult, but it's about the welfare of the animals," said Mazurek, who works full time as a senior project manager for a medical device company while serving as interim executive director. "The standard of care has changed. I'm not saying we were not meeting the standard of care for animals, but the changes are to ensure the animals' care and welfare." But a few employees say more emphasis has been placed on running the facility at 3040 State Road 590 like a business instead of focusing on the animals. "It used to be about the animals; that was the No. 1 thing to save as many animals as we could," said Jane Somers, the volunteer coordinator at the shelter.

"Now Bill is calling it a business. It's a nonprofit. I'm just afraid for the animals. People used to know that if they brought a sick animal to us, we would do everything in our power to keep that animal alive. And I fear that's not the case' anymore."
