DeHART, IDA "BETTY," 89, of Moss-Feaster Funeral Homes Cremation Services, Dunedin Meeting from Page 1 meeting fits the description of an illegal gathering: "If two or more members of the charter school board met and discussed anything that may for-seeably come to them in the future, that is a violation of the Sunshine Law." Boards found in violation of the law can face penalties that can include a $500 fine, removal from office and, in the most extreme cases, potential jail time. Bentley said all but one member of each board was present, as were a few parents. "It may have been an improper or a nuance of the law, but no decisions were made," said Gary Carson, board president and principal of the Language Academy Charter School, which hosted the meeting. Max Ramos, the Pasco County School District's pointman for charter schools, said he found an e-mail Monday morning that was sent to him Friday about 6 p.m. announcing plans to meet Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

Ramos was out of the office when the e-mail arrived, he said. Schools superintendent John Long said that he has tried to be clear with the charter schools P- MSRP: Rebate: Discount: CashAtade: MSRP: Rebate: inf CashTrade: teag $4,795 $4,999 $7,995 stock! $8,995 $8,995 $8,995 $8,999 $9,999 Details Al! vehllces plus tax, tag Hlte fee. "I told them that the only way they could meet out of the Sunshine was if they were in negotiations with a union quite frankly, they should have had a public meeting." The Sunshine Law governs public access to governmental decision-making and records. The law states that resonable notice must be given when public bodies meet, decisions are made and official actions are taken.

When first asked Monday about the meeting, Bentley said that his board took a vote during the meeting and that minutes recorded the vote, although he said he didn't believe it was necessary to take minutes during an "informal" meeting. Carson's account differed, but Bentley said that's because at one point the boards met separately. "All we did was have a meeting to see if were on the right page," Carson said. He said he and Bentley had been discussing a potential merger of the two schools, but wanted to see about getting the board members' opinions. "No vote was taken by my board and no minutes were taken.

We ate chicken," Carson said. Petersen, meanwhile, said charter schools need to pay attention to the law. Sl.l,Lm rl flT wSdo8R)OM fvr ymfLiJlM I I Jw, i SUZUKI BUICK 5.
