The Varuna Water Kichwood, Ohio. Gentlemen: I have been affected with Rheumatism, Kidney and Stomach troubles for several years and have suffered almost continuously with pains in my back and stomach. About a year ago I was confined to my bed for over a month and did not expect to recover. With good medical attendance I gradually became better and was able to be out again, but my trouble was not cured, and a short time ago I felt it coming on again. I commenced taking Varuna Water.

I have only used Varuna for about ten days butgl.already feel so much better that I recommend your water to any one afflicted with Rheumatism aDd Stomach or Kidney trouble. I feel confident that Varuna Water will permanently cure me. Respectfully, M. Evans. aid previous to Monday's primary, that "every iwMue of the Gazkttk whs making him dov.ena upon dozens of votes." In view of the result of the primary, taking Fulling study continuous readings from thejbest authors, than short pieces or selections.

Interest the pupil in the author, his home, home life and family, aud when he reads one interesting story or poem he will hunger for another. A contributor to the teachers' institute takes the following plan to introduce pupils to the best modern writers Each one 1 Is furnished with a small blank book called the "author book." The first four pages are reserved for the names of the authors, thus forming an index. After talking about some special author, the pupil writes a short sketch of his life with a list of his works. Then after reading a few of his best works, the pupil writes in the bock some of his own thoughts regarding both author aud writings. For the higher grades this suggestion might be very helpful.

It is a mistake to suppose that in suple-mentary reading we must give the pupils only information books and stories. These are good and substantial but knowledge is attained to a great extent through the text books and for awakening sympathy, imagination and emotions, fairy tales, fiction, poetry aud mythology are invaluable. Francis Parker says "The lack of ideality, the failure in spiritual growth, in true religious life, are caused more by the failure of parents to recognize the true nature of the child and his inborn love for myth than any other cause whatever. The rankest materialism in its worst form has never struck harder blows at true spiritual life, than the ignorance of misguided parents who keep their children from fairy life and fairyland." The best poetry can not fail to awaken the poetic spirit and love for, the beautiful in the child's mind, aud those who have access to Longfellow, Whittier, Tennyson and the many other of our high class, poets will find their natures growing more true, noble and lovely, James Whitcomb Riley and Eugene Field are loved by all children who have the slightest acquaintance with them. Place a book of either of these authors in the average child's hands and he will study it delightedly ancT with fresh interest for each new subject and as he grows up will always turn back to his childhood's literature with many tender memories and a longing for the purity of heart with which he once perused it a feeling thatcan not but awaken nobler thoughts.

The oral reproduction of the story or poem will help the child iu memorizing and expressing what the reading awakens in his mind. Children grasp the thought of the author, even though they do not understand all his expressions, much more readily than we are apt to think. So occasionally, a reading by the teacher, somewhat beyond them, is not a hindrance but a help, for their natural curiosity will be awakened and most of them, perhaps not all, will question as to the meaning of certain phrases, or consult the dictionary, which latter is a condition of devoutly wished for by most teachers. That each school building has not a good library is greatly tQ be lamented, but many pupils make use of the city library, in which case however, a. wise- and careful guide in the matter of selecting good literature is needed.

Reading is a fundamental study and its recitation should have as careful preparation as any other branch in the course of study. Not only by the pupil, but by the teacher as well, that she may be able to explain any quotation or reference with which the pupil may not be familiar, for we are all aware thatehildren expect the teacher to be the fount of knowledge, and woe be to the one who fails often in this respect. They who do the best possible work may not always see the results, but they are sure to come sometime in a greater or less decree if we "learn to labor and to Educational Sun. ton's enormous majority Into consideration THE Varuna Mineral Waters are obtained from the Varuna Wells at Richwood, Union County, Ohio, on the Cincinnati branch of the Erie R. R.

Richwood has a population of 2000, and on account of its wide streets, stone sidewalks and beautiful shade trees is considered one of the prettiest villages in Ohio. The Varuna Waters were discovered in September, 1899, in a beautiful grove convenient to the leading hotels and boarding houses. This entire grove of thirteen acres has been purchased by The Varuna Water Co. Bottling works have been erected and it is the purpose of the Company to erect bathhouses and further improve the place as a park and health resort. The wells are designated as Well No.

1, (1652 ft.) and Well No. 2, (340 flowing). All references are to Well No. otherwise noted. Varuna No.

Anyhow it would appear to a man on the fence that if "Big Four" now alas 1 the smallest 4 in Union county and at last tho death knell of this quartet of bosses has been sounded, and their funeral will be solemnly observed iu Marysville on the day when Mr. Fullington selects his delegates.

The contest has been a notable one, both candidates and their friends having put forth earnest and sustained efforts to carry the day, but as tho Gazkttk has always contended, the people have no use for boss-ism and, given a chance, as they were in Monday's primary, to voice their opinions, they will always speak in no uncertain tones for the success of clean candidates and for the downfall of the political tricksters and demagogues who triumph and delight in mass conventions. By reference to the tabulated report below, which shows the vote by precincts throughout the county, it will be seen that Mr. Ayers failed to carry a single township, and in Claibourne and Washington, in which his supporters claimed all along that he would make his strongest showing, he was defeated by majorities of 141 and 35 respectively. In Jerome and Union townships, where the Ruhlen and Whitten controversies were matters of universal knowledge among the people, the vote was decisive in favor of Mr. Fullington, and this effectually proves that the suits instituted against Mr.

Ayers in ihese cases were not in the nature of political "persecution." If they had been, the voters who were on the ground and possessed of inside knowledge regarding the 'facts, would have undoubtedly flocked to the there had only been a few more issues of th Gazkttk and tho Uniou County Republican circulated before the fight came off, Col. Del Varuna Greatly Helped Her. Richwood, Ohio, March 7, 1900. The Varuna Water Richwood, Ohio. Gentlemen I have been using our Varuna Water for some time for Stomach and Kidney trouble and it has been of great benefit to me.

Mrs. Geo. W. Kosht. Reading is the first as well as the most important branch of school work, for without it, all other branches are failures.

It is a growth, a development, which must be promoted in accordance with natural laws. When so directed, the progress is steady and results lasting and an ability to impart what the mind thinks and the heart feels, Is an aceomplishmeut to be obtained only by constant effort. Many pupils fail to get geography or. history because are not ablVuTread intelligently, therefore do not understand the real import of the words they memorize. Besides being the most Important branch, it is probably one of the most difficult to teach and the hearts of many otherwise successful teachers "sink to the very lowest depths when the hands of the clock point to "reading time." The primary teacher's work has been shortened and made less difficult within the last decade, and as the results are more immediate, she can well feel gratified with her labor.

But, in spite of all this, the teacher of the higher grades sees very little, if any, difference in the ability of the average pupil to acquire the pronunciation and definitions of new words. The object of primary reading is to learn to read. But that of advanced reading is to assimilate the thought of the author and fill the storehouse of the mind and the beautiful thought, the sublime spectacle, the grotesque or amusing are alike lost on the reader who must laboriously "spell out" the long words or pause to wonder what a certain phrase or clause may mean. The step from the second to the third reader is usually too great, and, as a rule, the reading is uninteresting because the vocabulary is out of the pupil's range of thought. He Is not able to grasp the many new words brought to his mind, and, in consequence, they are pronounced, if at all, mechanically.

The first requisites of a good reader are a quick comprehenson and an extensive vocabulary. The latter will grow and extend as the child learns to put his thoughts into words, so he should be encouraged to talk naturally and freely, instead of being repressed. All children possess imaginative power, some, it is true, in a greater degree than others, but in all cases it should be carefully trained. To teach the child to read understanding-ly is one of the great difficulties that presents itselt to the teacher. When a pupil gets the thought, he can read understand-ingly.

When he reads silently, he is" getting the thought, but when he reads aloud, he not only gets the thought but gives it, and in this way, reading becomes a mental process of development, calling into play all the activities of the brain and as this mektal power increases, the pupil becomes each day a better reader. If the child learns emphasis by imitation he has not grasped the thought, for when he gets the thought naturally, he will give the proper inflection and intonation. For reading is thinking. Children are intuitive and readily grasp the meaning; then emphasis, inflection and pauses come naturally When the pupil finds pleasure in the story wouldn't have received but four (big 4) votes all told. Superintendent E. C. Branson of Athens, says "The way to make a poor reader is to disgust him with the business. Teach him out of one book the whole year, let him derive it by right of inheritence along with the faded jackets of his elder brother; let it be old and battered let the pictures, stories and songs, be stale from the days of his earliest recollection of lesson getting let it be a book adapted and used in a system of schools seven or eight years, under the Tom fool impression that it is economy not to change books often. Let it be unsupple-mented, and reading becomes a failure." What to teach in reading is another important part of the work, for -after a child, once learns to read, unless great care is taken, he sinks instead of rises and while children want the experience of growth, they must begin at the very foot of the ladder and the reading of each day and week and year must be such as to expand their souls, and not weaken.

A taste for reading, if not inherited, should be acquired, for it will readily be seen that the best readers are those who read much and the parents who supply their children with good reading at home are the chief promoters of education. This should begin in early childhood, in fact as soon as the child is able to comprehend the meaning of simple words. The lore of Mother Goose has in every clime, long been the chief delight of the nursery. This, in time, gives place to the Dottie Dimple series and others of its kind and the advancement toward higher things, though slow, is steady and sure. It is through good literature that children form the highest ideals of true manhood and womanhood.

1 Supplementary reading will be found a 1 very great benefit in this line and should find a place in every school. Many a time since I have wished that the said opinions had not appeared so often in our newspapers, for by that act I had to endorse hundreds of times in personal interviews and by letters what I said in that public statement. It is now over two years since I stopped the treatment, and I can conscientiously say that in place of my estimation of Doan's Kidney Pills lessening to-day, it is stronger than when first formed.
