The bulk of the importations in silks and satins are plain black satins of all kinds, rhadames, de Lyons, duohesie, morveilieux, aud Surah, which will probably be worn by the majority of dressy women for dressy street and visiting costumes, but otto-mans will also be worn, or rather a new repped silk, similar to ottoman, to which the producers have given the name of faillo Francals. Velvets, as the velveteens are now Invoiced, will also be tmuch worn, but these velveteens are so finely finished it is difficult to distinguish them from the real silk velvets, plain or broche, the manufacturers of tho velveteen broches havine; learned how to imitate the varieties of cisele.

broche, and other fancy velvets to perfection. Heal velvet broche will probably play a more important roie in tne drama of fashion tins season than it ever has before. The word comes from over the water that we are to iiave another season of lace and velvet. This means a season of niagniiioeuee. Even little children are given dresses composed entirely 01 velvet broche and lace.

The weaving and effect in velvet broches defy description. There are long, short, curled, furry, cut ami uncut pilo, all lound in the same piece of velvet broche in figures of the longer pile on the shorter. and in designs that imitate the chiselinif of stone in some midieval tiothlc cathedral. Occasionally the velvets are shot, sometimes in as many as three different shots or in one piece; and. to add to their richness, metallic beads outline parts of the figures.

Other velvet br.iches have ottoman, serge, chevron, armure," Florentine, Beugaline. epingle, and other grounds, and somcfuies the figures are reversed, the plain part forming the sunken figure or design, the velvet pile the sun ace or ground of the tubnc These velvets come mostly in dark-brown shades or black, but there is a fair allowance made for ladles of more pronounced tastes, no aifeci. greuat, iron rust, on ve atid Kus-siau trreeiis, and even brighter shades of positive color. Bias folds are favored instead of flounces jr wool skirts. A pretty skirt has three Kits lapping folds, each four inches wide, of the same material as the dress, at the foot of the skirt. These may be of velvet or satin, pr any combination material. Braided borders, panels, and tucked skirts are not limited to ool goods, but are seen ou silks and satins, ismnter.es aud ban-is of veivet wid be used 011 bi.s during the coming season. In some models tli'f front and siden kilt plaits from three to six inches wide, separated by a cluster of narrow plaits, l'his style may externi around the entire skirt, but is more otteh confined to the iront and sides.

A new idea is to reverse tho plain i't meet on the sides, and two rows of buttons placed down each side form a pretty garniture. Silver braid in rows or will be a stylish tr.inming for black cashmere dresses, and letted braids will be used on silks, satins, and velvets. A stylish design for irroj ifrain or cashmere dresses is a revival from the tashion ot a few seasons ick, which is to cover the back breadths all the way to the waist with three side Plaited flounces, the lower one to surround the skirt. An apron Iront with a long point to the d-lie is made broad and full, to wrinkle at the top and extend back to meet the upier liounce. Brooklyn iyl4. IWATER-PKOOF TWEED. tOU MOUNTAIX CLIXI1IXO. However, by a very little change of those ireneral rules every simple costume mav be used as a foundation lor a street cos tume in rainy weather (tweed will also be found most appropriate for ulsters). The real use ot tweed is, however, only realised among the mountains, where it renders a waterproof unnecessary, snd on account of its texture gives the body a more efficient protection against rain, or change of temper ature, than any other stuff.

In order to render this costume, the chief feature of which must be that it allows perfect freedom of movement, suitable also for residence at the halting places, table d'hote, or promenade, a double skirt is much to be recommended either loug underskirt snd short tunic, or exactly opposite. If the underskirt is the only trimmed round the bottom with tweed. longest it may be msoe 01 suk or am ere, ana In order to make it lighter for mountain climbing, the tunie may be looped up at the side or in tne middle by Th Jtoaton, Jor Vtlooer. Now they average from 1 7 '-j to 111? at the knee, and slightly smaller at bottom.
