FIRST EDITION 2-B TIDE TAMPA TIMES, Friday, June 7, 1968 Driver Arnold Displays Big Perfecta Worth $2,181 To Two Fans at Sarasota Racing Sports manship ViSQii ARNOLD lets 'em by WITH ARCHIE BLOUNT SARASOTA Two fans believed that I'ma Believer was going to win the second half of the big perfecta and that Barney Claude would run second and for picking this 3-2 combination they collected $2,181 each at the Sarasota Kennel Club last night. Casey West and Judy Claude made up the winning 2-4 combination in the first big perfecta race and there were only 26 exchanges in the $4,362 pool. The Tampa Times' handi-capper had a good night, picking four top winners and four other winners in other races among selections. Roy J. is the selection in the feature race tonight.

He will be trying for his fifth win of the season. We are fortunate to have more than a few outstanding stock car drivers on the local racing scene. On rare occasions, through an act of courtesy or in an emergency, a driver of this description will further distinguish himself and do credit to the sport. Last Friday night, during the late model feature race at Golden Gate Speedway, Jack Arnold performed in such a manner. ARNOLD, the father of eight children and defending late model point champ from last year, began the 25-lap feature mid-way back in the pack of 19 racing machines.

By the time the fifth lap had rolled by, Arnold had gunned his 1966 Fairlane "Seafood Special" alongside Billy Hancock's leading Chevy. The two cars battled fender to fender around the third-mile asphalt track, Hancock unable to shake the bulldogging Arnold, and "Big Daddy" Arnold unable to slip by Hancock. Behind Arnold and Hancock, two faster cars awaited an opportunity to slip inbetween. JIM Alvis and Clearwater's Dave Mclnnis were the third and fourth cars running just inches behind Arnold and Hancock. Both Alvis and Mclnnis were pushing with their powerful Chevelles.

Rd. north of the Oldsmar horse of three classes will be going Speedway Saturday. Billy Gill Dan Daughtry is two-up in the Faircloth will take aim at No. 3 Fishing Tides For Tomorrow TOMORROW'S TIDES High Tide, 2:00 a.m., 11:54 a.m.; Low Tide, 5:24 a.m.. 7:54 p.m.

As the race entered the final laps, Arnold saw he couldn't pass Hancock, try as he may and that being on the outside, he was holding up Alvis and Mclnnis. Arnold could have said to heck with the faster cars behind him and gone on to have finished second or maybe even have won it.

But Arnold didn't. INSTEAD, he swung high going into the No. 1 turn and waved Alvis and Mclnnis by as if he was experiencing some kind of mechanical trouble. But Arnold wasn't having any problems. "I just didn't feel right, holding up the race," Arnold noted after the race, "so I let them go by." Arnold finished fourth behind Alvis, Mclnnis and Hancock.

Alvis the current high point leader was somewhat dum-founded after getting the wave from Arnold. "You've got to admire a guy like that," Alvis nodded after the race. "There just aren't too many like him on the track." track Three drivers in each for three in a row at Sunshine is eyeing the late model laurels, Figure-8 competition and Kenny in the tornado class. T. Tommy Crampton Leads At Indy INDIANAPOLIS un Bruce Crampton of Australia carried a two-stroke lead into today's second round of the $100,000 Speedway Open Golf Tournament. Crampton rattled off four birdies on the back nine Thursday and finished with a four-under-par 68. Billy Casper, PGA leading money winner, was tied for second with a ,70 after being penalized two strokes when his caddy raked a sand trap before Casper hit on the third hole. THE EFFORTS by Crampton and Casper, who played together, overshadowed the fine shooting of John Lively and Masters champion Bob Goalby.

Lively, 28, of Canton, shot a hole-in-one on the par 3 204-yard 17th hole, and Goalby fired his first double-eagle on the par 5 503-yard seventh hole. Casper, Goalby and Lively were locked in a seven-way tie for second place with Speedway defending champ Frank Beard, Don Fairfield, Jim Grant and Bobby Cole. Jack Tuthill, PGA tournament director, said a special service in memory of Sen. liobert F. Kennedy will precede the tournament's final round Sunday.

Players will wear black tabs on their clothes as part of the national day of mourning proclaimed by President Johnson. The 138-man field will be trimmed to the low 70s and ties today for the final two rounds.
