The Holy Door, walled up for the 25 years between Holy Years, was dismantled brick by brick last week, leaving only an outside layer for the Pope's hammer to strike three times. Then from inside, ropes will be used to pull the door down. In his annual Christmas address to the College of Cardinals Monday, Pope Paul said the beginning of the Holy Year finds the world "floundering on the edge of the abyss." He cited the violence in Northern Ireland, Vietnam and the Middle East and stressed the significance of the Holy Land to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. "How much we desire that Jerusalem, instead of being the object of continuing strife, may become the crossroads of a fraternal encounter of all those who believe in one God and the symbol of peace for the peoples of the Holy Land and all the peoples of the Middle East," the pontiff said. In proclaiming the 1975 Holy Year, Pope Paul said earlier he hoped it would lead to spiritual renewal in men, reconciliation among them, and within his own church an end to dissidence and the challenges to dogma.

This is Pope Paul's second close involvement in Holy Year observances. In 1950, as the Vatican's Substitute Secretary of State, he helped prepare Pope Pius XII's mid-century. Holy Year that drew 1.5 million pilgrims. The Vatican estimates this time about 2 million will visit Rome. The first Jubilee Holy Year was held in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII, who stipulated they should take place every 100 years.

(J-T photo) Christmas Bonuses Are Fewer NEW YORK (AP) In a year of recession and layoffs, Christmas bonuses for employes are fewer and generally smaller than they were a year ago.

The Bureau of National Affairs, a private business information service in Washington, says a survey of 136 firms shows that only 13 per cent a are paying Christmas bonuses this year, compared with 25 per cent when the firms were last surveyed six years ago. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry in New York City reports that 36 companies in its annual survey of 400 New York metropolitan area companies have discontinued Christmas bonuses this year. Among the 122 firms in the survey still giving bonuses this year, more than 60 per cent have switched since last year from giving as a bonus a percentage of annual salary to giving a lump sum bonus. The Bureau of National affairs also reported that 58 per cent of the companies now forbid employes from accepting gifts from other firms with which they do business. Wall Street, despite its many losses this year, is giving some of the biggest bonuses.

Dillon Read Co. is paying bonuses of up to 100 per cent of annual salary. The Bellefontaine teachers' application for state benefits may be the first test of teacher eligibility for unemployment during a forced school closing. Hammond said state legislators had "not thought of it in terms of a school closedown" when they approved compensation for teachers in January 1974. Three other school districts in closed early due to lack of funds, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Education said. Beman S. Pound, director of the bureau's division of unemployment compensation, said some Warren teachers, affected by a shutdown, also have filed for unemployment benefits.

Pound said initial unofficial interpretation of a recent state attorney general's opinion makes teachers laid off due to school closures ineligible for benefits. Pound said the eligibility question still is under consideration. If full delayed contract payments are met within the next few weeks, he said, Bellefontaine teachers probably are ineligible for unemployment benefits.
