THE TIMES. TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 11. 1919. The Kings Record Motor Drive.

VPnu The Daimler Company Ltd. has received the following' letter from Captain. The Hon. Sir Charles Went worth Fitzwilliam KCVO Crown Equerry to HIS MAJESTY KING GEORGE V. October yth 1919.

I was desired by His Majesty to express to you his appreciation of the running. of the Daimler Cars used by Their Majesties on their journey from Balmoral to London on the 3rd and 4th instant. Both cars which have been in constant service since they were delivered by you some years ago. ran the of of 541 miles without the least trouble of any sort. The second' car a Brake was for luggage only so Their Majesties depended entirely on the reliability of one of their Daimler Limousines.

By a Special Motoring Correspondent. One of the new ors that is attracting great attention et the Motor Show the Rushton. Hornsby. Whatever etse the builder has on has not done to outward seeming lie has produced an attractive vehicle and nowadays a looking" car is more than ever an asset to its maker. for buyers now have definite ideas.

Given two haxsia one 20 per cent poorer than the other in its mechanical construction but. having bettor lines the chances are that buyers will neglect the first chassis. In the' however theta is the happy combination of good engineering with modern appear. sore therefore. if the maker can produce the vehicles according to programme.

the car has a successful future before it. The engine has many modem features. The bore and stroke' respectively are 80 by 13Omm. the cylinder heads being detachable ignition is provided by tension magneto lubrication is by pump three bill bearings being provided to tarry the throw crankshaft. The rabies are neatly housed an important feature.

so far as the owner-driver concerned being the pressure gauge which acts as a telltale to the state of the lubrication system. As matter of hut lie makers of the Rushton- Hornsby ear have taken a bold course and gone to a spifialixit firm for their in" which are by Uormans. of Stafford. A novel but not untried feature of the tranimLision is the housing of the gearbox further aft than usual this component forming at extension of tire hack-axle casing. The drive from the inverted clutch is by a tubular I propellrr-Kliaft enclosed by a torque- tube.

which is neatly wd at its forward end in a forked coupling attached to a sturdy I member. The general trarumiainn design is commendable and should lend itself readily to manufacture. Speedometer drive is provided from a pinion on tin gear-box shaft. The rear-axle is driven both brakes operating on wheel drums. A satisfactory point about the open touring ear that the hood disappears into a reeds behind the back seats when owtnl The interior-drive cabriolet body on view shows how the chassis adapts itself to modern hork The complete touring car costs t600 the enclosed body being priced at 973.

PRICE INCREASES. Something of a sensation was caused by' the. increase in prim of broth the Sander. and the Aubt in curs. loth these vehicles which have been well advertised have ranked in the public wind as very economical carsbut those with any knowledge of present conditions have known for some time that even with the advan" tape of great manufacturing facilities prices would Inevitably have to be increased thoj designs clanged or the quality of the cars reduced.

Fortunately broth makers decided against the latter course. The Austin is a straightforward job which' may be regarded as a typically British massed- production car. The maker greatly increased his manufacturing resources during the war. i and when all the Government contracts were terminated it was derided to build a popular- priced vehicle in big quantities on up-to-1 date lines. a scheme for which the modern tool plant and out of the works were particularly stilted.

Slight changes in design have been made from time to time. and the vcliirle has Leon well tested on the road. hence the cars on view at Olympia now I representative of the best Austin work. The Treasury rating on the cylinder darn lions of 3lin by Sin. gives 4 hp.

but the car is commonly- known as I he Austin Twenty 1" The cooling water is pump eirmlatedthe jackets and passages being run out of the ordinary. A magneto very accessibly located provides for I he ignition. while the lubrica- Stion is by forced I. a point worth noting being the. oil-filling and the filtration facilities provided.

Through. a single plate clutch the drive is to a speed gearbox the whole construction being on the unit system with central' controls. From the gearbox a propeller shaft' takes the drive to the buck-axle which uses helical-bevel gearing. Three standard body finishes are provided. together with a variety of cochwork of which typical examples are to be seen on the firms stand.

The seated open touring body now Costs under tin revised prices. 593. The AngusSanderson is an ascmbled proposition. In other words the makers have asked a number of specialist concerns first to provide a generally acceptable design for the completed car and secondly to build the components approved on the I scheme- The sponsor of the plan assembles the chassis and provides the coechwork. The idea from an points of view manufacturing assembling.

I financial and last but far from least the buyers has much to commend it. One gathers also that the completed chi has exceeded the expectations both of its builders and of independent drivers in actual service. With a omplte electrical equipment detachable slat wheels and ready for the road in every respect the open touring car sells for 573. it will be of interest to those who have orders now on the books of both Austin and Angus to know that deliveries are to ho mode at the prices quoted when the orders were placed he increases applying only to new orders. BELSIZE CARS.

These chassis whorls have their origin in Manchester are not nearly so well known ay their general excellence deserves. Probably the makers new one model" policy will serve to concentrate public opinion on hl' product. It is certain that. his moderate and sensible ideas in the matter of car costs and the prices which the public may reasonably boo expect to pay for a sound light chassis will go far towards making he nze an unusual ourih The tirni lighter car of 914 is now merged in the 15 vehicle which sells us a complete chassis with the tires for full electrical equipment co tins an additional 30. From the engine dimensions and the power developed it will be gathered that the unit is of.

the high efficiency type. Actually- the' cylinder sizes I are 90mmm bore by 110 nun stroke which gives an RAC rating of :0.1 hr The normal engine speed is comparatively low the makers state it as 1000 revolutions per minute. The unit quite an attractive piece of work. the monobloc casting being comparatively free from external pipes and fittings. The valves are of the side-by-side type enclosed by quick detachable casings.

Lubrication is by a combination of pressure feed and splash a magneto providing for the ignition. The petrol feed is on the vacuum principle sod an important point in regard to the clutch design is that the component can be dismounted without disturbing either engine or gearbox the latter component. by the way. provides four forward speeds. Belsize Motors show several different types of coachwork at Olympia.

One would particularly direct the attention of the economically inclined motorist to the painted two-seater with dickey seat which is good value at 50 complete. SERVICE FOR OWNERS. The Albert ear is So newcomer and while not claiming to be anything revolutionary. the firm responsible for it urge that in appearance the car is equal to many tone. expensive while in general construction std designit la atleaftt the equal of its nearest rival.

A very unusual feature about the car however is we modern scheme of service which it is intended to upplp to owners. One gathers that. depots are to be. established in venous areas throurfaout the kingdom. wherein the respective engineers and' stats will be specially trained in the construction of the Albert car.

The actual selling of the vehicle it to be left to the appointed trade agents the special functions of the special depots being to stock and supply spates for too car and to give advice to both private I owners and the trade. The engine is of the monobloc type. with I mod-feed lubrication. thermo cooling. and a magneto for ignition purposes.

A leather cone-clutch transmits the drive to the four. speed gear-box and thence the power is taken by a shaft enclosed by the torque tube to the el hack-axle wherein unspruOj weight has been reduced to a minimum. Roth brakes operate on drums fitted to the bask wheels cantilever type springing is used both front and back. An unusual feature in regard to this car is that two spare wheels and tires me supplied with the chassis. BEARDMORE CARS.

This well-known engineering Jinn makes its bow to the public on stand IS- A great many rumours have been current in regard to- this firms proltrmme concerning motor-car manu- facture. the understands now that it is the I official intention to build a very comprehensive i range of motors of all types including motor. cycles light cars weight vehicles powerful machines. and also commercial motors. I As well over 40000 employees are now in the company's service the scheme cannot be I regarded as over-ambitious.

I The weight Beardmore car on view is quite a sound engineering job. in regard to which after quite a superficial examination one is prepared to hazard the opinion that there are many years of work before the ear with a minimum of upkeep cost. The main construe. tional features comprise a cylinder ntonobloc engine with a bore and stroke respectively of 80mm- and l2Omm. the Treasury rating being 6 hp The cooling water is pump circulated engine lubrication being of the forced feed type.

A FRENCH CAB. I tharron Limited the well-known French i manufacturer holds the controlling' interest I in U' So Laycock Limited a firm which is now manufacturing Charron cars in this' country' tinder the name of Laycock. Tike lighter chassis will ho dealt with elsewhere in this particular instance one is more con: corned with the actual French Charron. The Treasury rating of the 21 hp. cylindered ear is 18 hp.

although naturally an engine of S5mm. bore by I50mm. stroke develops considerably more power on the bench. Beyond improvement of detail Charron does not depart from his established custom. but one notes that the electric system is by the Westinghouse i Company.

The pleasing three-quarter landau. i letto body on view is fitted on an 24 chassis the complete vehicle costing 1550 chassis price being 960. The price of the 17 hp cylinder harron chassis which is beautifully i polished. though one is at a loss to understand I why a polished chassis should be any more i useful to the ordinary motorist than the ordinary works finish is FIATS. Two of the Fiat cars now on view at Olympia are entirely new models.

The larger. specimen I is known as the 30 hp type. The first thing to' attract the visitors attention is the neat i appearance of tho cylindered engine the I details of the. mounting of the electrical equip-merit warranting close examination. They are I us a matter of ft definitely embodied in the engine design as apart from being mounted as' simple accessories.

The visitor should note with interest the care which has been expended on protecting and enclosing the gears of the starting motor. A petrol consumption of between 18 miles per gallon is claimed for this car which if the actual running substantiates the claim. will prove unusually satisfactory. The smaller Fiat has a most efficient engine which of 2000 revolutions per minute elope rather more then 22 hp a splendid result for a small four-cylindered unit with a bore and stroke of only S5mm. end 1IOmm.

respectively. The designer still adheres to vanes of the side. side variety in this chassis. The carburettor' i is bolted direct to the cylinder casting unit construction of engine clutch. and gear-box being used.

An interesting feature is that i when the gear cover is removed three housings 1 in one are revealed the forward compartment provides for the clutch. the oentre which has an inner lid is the gearbox proper. while the third compartment tarries the brake control mechanism and oil for the forward universal-joint. It is claimed that the speed gear-box which is only fin long by Slin. wide on its outside dimensions is the smallest ever fitted.

I The successof the designer in reducing chassis weight is shown by the fact that the complete' assembly weighs barely llcwt. while with a standard seated body and full equipment the complete car hardly weighs more than lGcwt THE SAFER FLYING" CONTESTS.
