SHIRES CHAPEL HILL, N. Oct. 17. (U) Maryland's marvelous Terrapins stormed almost the distance of the field four times for touchdowns today to knock North Carolina out of the undefeated ranks by a thumping 26-0 score. Far outplaying a penalty-plagued foe, the scarlet-shirted terrors from College Park, the nation's fourth-ranked football machine, marched 92, 85, 72 and 65 yards to score before 35,000 convinced fans.

It was Maryland's fifth straight victory. Quarterback Bernie Faloney engineered two of the marches but covered and only on Georgia's lone scoring drive was he able to con nect with regularity Statistics Texas Dumps Arkansas By 16 to 7 FAYETTEVILLE, Oct. 17 A brutish Texas line shoved the lightweight Arkansas Razor-backs around most unmercifully today and the Longhorns opened the defense of their Southwest Conference football championship with a 16-7 victory. The Texas offense operated in spurts except in the second quarter when the three-platoon Longhorns scored all their points in six minutes, and in the end it was the eight-man defensive line smearing Arkansas' single wing attack that spelled the difference. Those Texas forwards halted Razorback threats at the Longhorn 10 and 19 in the first quarter and rushed so hard all the way that Arkansas' heralded passing attack never had a chance.

Baylor's 4 j. uavis went tnrougn tne middle for the TD and Stringfield again converted. This was the first time since 1951 that Georgia has lost three games in succession, ine Dunaogs his sub, Charley Boxold, was at the controls for those that covered most ground. Maryland bent under two determined Tar Heel scoring threats once in the first period and again as the second half started but each time the huge line led by Tackle Bobby Morgan stopped it and Jim Tatum's backfield leeions Alabama, Tennessee Battle had lot to and Maryland.

This also was the first time the Bulldogs had failed to score at least twice this year. One of these came in the third period on the Tennessee five, where 'Bama's Corky Tharp fumbled after a 40-yard run.

That drive had started on the Alabama nine. Immediately after this disaster to Alabama hopes, Guard Charlie Eckerly came within inches of registering a safety for Alabama. A bad snap from the center to Tennessee's Bob Brengle, back to punt, was run out to the one before Eckerly slammed him back into the end zone. Players Protest Eckerly and other 'Bama players protested that he had been tackled back of the goal line but the officials ruled otherwise. Alert Tennessee backs, with Jimmy Wade in the van, stopped Alabama's passers cold.

Sophomore Bart Starr, a fine airman in previous games, could complete only three tosses for a net of just eight yards. In the final seconds Starr was nailed back on the 'Bama one as he failed to get off a last despera- -gam to the North Carolina 16. score. The Bulldogs second move into deep LSU territory featured a 37-yard pass, Brat to Carson. It was here that another Brat- Felton cracked to the seven, then across for two touchdowns today as VMI's Keydets came from behind to upset the University of Virginia 21-6 at Sunny Scott Stadium.

A dismayed homecoming crowd of 18,000 watched Mapp smash over from the six and then from the three-yard line in the third period. Halfback Charlie Lavery scored the other VMI touchdown from the two-foot line with less than three minutes to play. Quarterback Royce Jones kicked three extra points. The over-eager Cavaliers fumbled six times and VMI recovered five, setting up two scores. The Cavalier offense was sparked by the passing of Quarterback Rives Bailey.

He picked up plenty of yardage in the second period, including a 35-yard touchdown toss to Halfback Allen Barbee that gave Virginia a halftime 6-0 lead. VMI's big line rushed Bailey off his feet throughout the second half. Mapp, Southern Conference hurdles champion and leading offensive star of VMI, lived up to his advance billing as his running sparked the victor's drives and his long, spiraling kicks kept the Cavaliers against the wall. Neither team" was able to move into scoring position in the first period, but in the second period, after Virginia Fullback Henry Strempek intercepted a VMI pass, Bailey led Barbee beautifully with a pass into the end zone. Guard John Polzer was wide with his extra-point attempt.

Then Davidson helped account for the fourth, tally of the first half with a nine-yard toss to End Charles Bristow on the goal line.

Not to be outdone by their big brothers, the Baylor second team pulled the string for a 56-yard scoring jaunt by sophomore Wet-don Holly in the third period. Substitute Quarterback Billy Hooper, who doesn't need any lessons on how to pass, catapulted Baylor 47 yards on two completions. Back to pass again, he saw a big hole and galloped outside right tackle for seven yards and Baylor's sixth touchdown. He snaked from the two for another tally in the final minutes and a half. J.
