16.00 11 88 Reg. IS. 50 KUEBLER'S jewelry GIFTS OUR 82ND YEAR DOWNTOWN JASPER termine the cause of a passenger train derailment Tuesday which injured 29 persons. Floridian passenger train derailed, on Penn Central tracks a mile northwest of this Northern Indiana community. Twenty-seven of the injured were treated at Pulaski County Memorial Hospital.

Two others did not require hospital treatment. All of the injuries were minor and no one was admitted to the hospital. Another passenger with a diabetic condition was taken to the hospital for a brief rest, but was not injured. There were 121 persons on the northbound train. Amtrak said there were 103 passengers and 14 employes, such as stewards and porters.

Penn Central officials at Logansport, where the crews are changed, said there were four crew members on board. The Floridian was en route from Miami, to Chicago, and was running about six hours behind schedule when the accident occurred. Police at the scene said the train was late because it had to be rerouted around another derailment in Florida. Police also said this was the fourth train derailment in this general area in the past two years, although the others involved freight trains. Conductor Mason J.

Arnold and engineer Don L. Thomas, both of Logansport, said the train was moving about 45 miles per hour when the derailment happened. The train included 15 cars and three diesel engines. Only the lead engine and the rear car remained on the tracks. The cars included two baggage cars, a sleeper, two coaches, a dining car, a lounge car, another coach, four more sleepers and three mail cars, in that order.

All of the derailed units remained upright on the railroad right-of-way, but six were leaning at steep angles and another was tilting slightly. It appeared the soft ground under the rails helped slow the derailed cars and possibly prevent them from overturning. Investigators said the ers remained calm as they were removed from the train by rail employes and rescue workers. Some of the passengers said they realize the train had derailed. Others said they felt a large bump just before the cars tilted and stopped.

Ambulances and other rescue units took the injured to the hospital. School buses were used to transport the non-injured to a Methodist church here. Later, intercity buses were brought from Logansport and used to haul the passengers to Chicago. The derailment occurred along a stretch of double track. The second track was not damaged and some freight trains were able to move past the wreckage at speeds of 5 to 10 m.p.h.

Later, the second track was blocked by the wrecked train.
