TIMES THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1998 5 111 Allsport Quarterback Donovan McNabb leads a Syracuse squad that is rich in experience and scoring power. Listed in predicted order of finish. Syracuse COACH: Paul Pasqualoni, 8th year (60-22-1; 94-39-1 overall, 12 years). 1997 RECORD: 9-4 overall, 6-1 in Big East (Lost to Kansas State 35-18 in Fiesta Bowl). KEY RETURNEES: QB Donovan McNabb (three-time All-Big East), TB Kyle Mcintosh (74.8 yards per game), FB Rob Konrad, WR Quinton Spotwood (19.4 yards per catch), WR Kevin Johnson (19.1 ypc), Scott Kiernan, DT Brian Coleman, LBs Keith Bullock and Morion Greenwood, PK Nate Trout (3 FGs in Fiesta Bowl).

KEY LOSSES: TE Roland Williams, LB Antwaune Ponds (1 19 tackles), CB Rod Gadson, Donovin Darius (119 tackles). NOTES: Lookout, scoreboard. The Orangemen are ready to pile up the points. They set a league record with 423 points last year and return players who accounted for 83 percent of them. The Orangemen are looking to avoid the slow starts that bogged them down the past three seasons, but that won't be easy with a schedule that begins with Tennessee and Michigan State.

Pasqualoni needs six wins to reach 100. West Virginia COACH: Don Nehlen, 19th year (130-79-4; 183-112-8 overall in 27 seasons. 1997 RECORD: 7-5, 4-3 Big East (lost to Georgia Tech 35-30 in Carquest Bowl). KEY RETURNEES: RB Amos Zereoue (2,447 career yards, 150.5 ypg), QB Marc Bulger (2,1 12 yards), WR Shawn Foreman (6 catches per game), WR David Saunders (83 ypg in '96), OT Solomon Page (First-team All-Big East), Eric deGroh (Academic Ail-American), NG John Thornton (51 tackles), DT Kevin Landolt, LB Gary Stills (11 sacks), LB Damon Cogdell (8.3 tpg), CB Nate Terry (four INTs), CB Perlo Bastien (nine break-ups, four INTs), PK Jay Taylor (Lou Groza semifinalist). KEY LOSSES: TE Chad Wable (13-189-3), RB Curtis Keaton (60-292-3), LB John Hadley (74 tackles), DL Henry Slay (7 sacks).

NOTES: The Mountaineers are just about everyone's pick to win the Big East title. They welcome back 16 starters, most of any team. Included is Zereoue, a Heisman front-runner who averaged 150 yards per game. The offense also is in the experienced hands of Bulger, who has a veteran cast of receivers. If the Mountaineers can stay healthy on defense, they might do some big-game hunting on New Year's Day.

Virginia Tech COACH: Frank Beamer, 12th year (68-56-2; 1 10-79-4 overall in 17 years). 1997 RECORD: 7-5, 5-2 Big East (lost to North Carolina 42-3 in Gator Bowl). Mutryn or Tim Hasselback, younger brother to the departed Matt. The Eagles have enough skill: to challenge for a bowl. Pittsburgh COACH: Walt Harris, 2nd year (6-6); 17-30 overall in four seasons.

1997 RECORD: 6-6, 4-3 Big East (lost to-Southern Mississippi 41-7 in Liberty Bowl). KEY RETURNEES: QB Matt Lytle (1,646 career yards; 11 starts), Andrew' Grischow, Ethan Weidle (1 1 starts last year), WR Terry Murphy', (13 TD catches last year), DE Julian Graham (7 tackles for losses), DE Marlin Young (9 tackles for losses), DT Jeff McCurley, LB Phil Clarke 1 24 tackles), D.J. Dinkins, CB Tray Crayton (3 INTs). KEY LOSSES: QB Pete Gonzalez (198-345-7, 2,657, 30 TDs), TB Dwayne Schulters (861 yards rushing, 208 yards receiving), WR Jake Hoffard (64 catches), Tony Orlandini, Reggie Thomas, Jon Marzoch, DT Frank Moore, LBs Roderick Humphrey and Eric Kasperowicz (80 tackles). NOTES: The Panthers jumped up and surprised people last year after being dismal in previous seasons.

However, to earn a second straight bowl bid, they'll have to be more consistent. As good as things were last year, they also lost to Temple and needed OT to beat lowly Rutgers. Harris has instilled some much-needed discipline. The non-conference schedule includes games against Penn State and North Carolina. Temple COACH: Bobby Wallace, 1st year.

82-36-1 overall in 10 years. 1997 RECORD: 3-8, 3-4 Big East. KEY RETURNEES: QB Kevin Harvey (251 passing yards, 3 starts in '97), RB Stacey Mack (842 yards), RB Elmarko Jackson (645), Scott 4 Oster, Konrad Dean, Tim Leach, Charlie Morris, DE Michael Tripp (9 sacks), DT Kenyatta Williamson (65 tackles), LB Deion McCallum, LB Ramone Budgetts, LB Akeiff Staples, Jerry Urias (94 tackles), CB Lamond Adams. KEY LOSSES: WR Kevin Walker (34- 688-4), WR Troy Kersey (25-467), DT Larry Chester (5 sacks), LB 1, Decara Burgess (6 sacks). NOTES: Ron Dickerson thought about quitting in '96 as head 'a coach.

Last year, he was more decisive. In steps Wallace, who is accustomed to rebuilding. He took" over a troubled North Alabama program in '88 and wound up winning three Division II champi- onships. But Wallace is in with the big boys now, and his challenge is to lead the Owls to their first win-ning season since '90. Rutgers COACH: Terry Shea, third year (2-20)," 17-26-2 overall in four seasons.

1997 RECORD: 0-11. KEY RETURNEES: QB Mike McMahon (1,259 yards last season), RB Jacki' Crooks (68.9 ypg), RT Ryan Comeau, RG Pete Donnelly, LG Ben French, LT Shaun O'Hara, WR-Walter King (24.7 ypc), WR Andy Holland (28-276-3), TE Chris Hutton (21-241), DE Wayne Hampton (66 tackles), LB Aaron Brady (9.1 tpg), LB Terrell Freeney, CB Riley Jefferson. KEY LOSSES: Jack McKieman, LB -Brian Sheridan (161 tackles), CB Thomas Kelly, CB Norris Crawford (75 tackles). NOTES: Things can't get much worse than last year for the Scarlet Knights, who gave up 49.5 points per game against conference opponents. It was hoped that Shea's arrival two years ago would turn things around.

Shea is a disciple of the West Coast offense, but he needs to start landing more blue-chippers from the talent-laden New Jersey area. The schedule should help, as it includes l-AA Richmond, plus Tulane, Army and Navy, and conference home games against Temple and Pitt. CHARLES MULLING of 12 straight New Year's Day bowl appearances. If Davis is to wind up earning big bucks as an NFL head coach, he must prove that he can get the 'Canes back on the right path. The days of blaming NCAA sanctions for on-field problems are about over.

UM fans are used to Top 10 finishes and major bowl appearances, and that shouldn't be difficult in the soft Big East Boston College COACH: Tom O'Brien, 2nd year (4-7). 1997 RECORD: 4-7, 3-4 Big East. KEY RETURNEES: RB Mike Cloud (88.6 ypg), FB Quinton Lee (313 yards in 5 games), WRs Anthony DiCosmo (24-362-4) and Dennis Harding (29-432-2), Doug Brzezinski (All-Big East), Damien Woody (All-Big East), NG Chris Hovan (4 sacks), LB Frank Chamberlin, Pedro Cirino (130 tackles), George White (91). KEY LOSSES: QB Matt Hasselbeck 11 TDs), RB Omari Walker (136-652), FB Mike Hemmert, OL Noah LaRose, Andy Mitcham and Jon Miles, WR Todd Pollack (28-296), TE Scott Dragos, LBs Markell Blount (5 sacks), Erik Storz (13 sacks). NOTES: Expectations are always high around BC, which hasn't been to a bowl since '94.

O'Brien could use a winning season to keep the detractors away. The Eagles must lock in on a quarterback either Scott KEY RETURNEES: QB Al Clark (1,476 yards, 10 TDS), RB Lamont Pegues (391 yards, 5 TDs), WR Angelo Harrison (18-234-3), OT Derek Smith, Dwight Vick (323 pounds), DT John Engelberger (9 tackles for losses), DTs Nat Williams (52 tackles), Carl Bradley (49 tackles), LB Jamel Smith (92 tackles), Pierson Prioleau (third-team Ail-American), Keion Carpenter (four interceptions), Jimmy Kibble (45.1 ypp). KEY LOSSES: RB Ken Oxendine (232-904-8), Gennaro DiNapoli, Todd Washington, Brad Baylor, WRs Michael Stuewe (15-180) and Shawn Scales, LB Steve Tate (104 tackles, 4 sacks). NOTES; Aside from Miami, Virginia Tech has been a mainstay near the top of the conference standings. The Hokies won the title in '95, tied for first in '96 and went to a bowl for the fifth straight season last year.

We're about to find out how Beamer's recruiting has been lately, as he must replace 1 1 starters. Clark was on his way to a banner season at QB before suffering a knee injury. Miami COACH: Butch Davis, fourth year, (22-12). 1997 RECORD: 5-6, 3-4 Big East. KEY RETURNEES: RB Edgerrin James (1,098 yards, 14 TDs), RB James Jackson (595 yards), WR Reggie Wayne (48-640), WR Daryl Jones f-3r i JT I' i t--- liMiajt a aft AP West Virginia running back Amos Zereoue is a Heisman front-runner who averaged 1 50 yards per game last season.

KEY LOSSES: QB Ryan Clement (6,004 career passing yards, 36 TDs), FB Carlo Joseph, OLs Kerlin Blaise, Carlos Callejas and Mike Wehner, CB Duane Starks, Eugene Ridgley.
