ti.CO XX WS TKUCFHOXB CALLS: Csusttog Boom, 860-D. Editorial Room, 668-1 EYLNLNG NEWS TEIiGRAPfl BUFFALO, WEDNESDAY, NOT. 6. '80, THASKSGirLSa. In accordance with custom Tei News will observe tomorrow as a holiday tha annual festival of national thanksgiving.

No paper will be tooed from this office tomorrow. The newsboys will have something to do besides their usual business. A thousand of taunt will feed on turkey and cranberries at Music Ball till the crying of papers is a physical impossibility. May (rood digestion wait on youthful appetite. No more in the way of physical comfort could any boy ask.

Custom honors the practice ef suiting reasons for thankf uluess on the occasion thus celebrated every year. Pretty good authority expresses gratitude in general terms "for all thy goodness and loving kindness to us and to all men" but for this our creation, preservation and all the blessings of this lite" we an supposed to give "humble and hearty thanks" every oftener. The aililude of thanksgiving for general blessings is habitual with some with some too, perhaps, who do not formulate their obligation in conventional ways. Mora specific reasons for national gratitude are stated by the best secu lar authority in the President's message. Good crops, peace and national progress are the most of these.

On the other side of-the ocean, however, Queen Victoria has just sent a message to Parliament, miscalled a speech, giving as good grounds for imperial complacency as we have for our republican content. She speaks of peace and progress too, and says that even in Ireland things are in better shape and local famine Is not beyond the help of "my Government" Over in Germany, everybody is on the point of singing Te Deums because Virchow's great disciple has discovered the germ of the I disease which is mankind's greatest enemy. France is happy and rich; Brazil is free and independent; everywhere some cause for gratuiation and gratitude is to be found. If we have a peculiar reason for thanksgiving beyond all other nations itwould seem to be traceable further than any of these conditions. Something in national character composite and vigorous underlies all our actual advantages; accounts for our material progress, our independence of traditional restraints, our very freedom of thought All these blessings are possible as a result, in part at least, of circumstances, and the most important of these circumstances, as one of the greatest Americans has pointed out, is the wide separation of the new world from the frets and worries the standing armies and the temptations to war and war conditions, which afflict the old.

And so we come back to the first of our Presidents for the chief cause of thanksgiving and follow George Washington in gratitude to High Heaven for the opportunity given a new people from which all our blessings Sow. The broad view of tbe man who warned Americans that tbey-wetild be happy as long as they kept free from "entangling alliances" and mixed up none of the maundering state-craft of the OA World with their young aspirations, "is the one on which we can best base our national thanksgiving. It is an American festival, in expression of gratitude, for American conditions, and the is its propnet In celebrating Thanksgiving Bay we commemorate in more significant fashion tbe patriotic wisdom which inspired him in bis efforts to make America separate in all ber intereste-truly people set spartfHhaniir the perfunctory oratory and grudging half- suspension of business of the 22d of February. We celebrate George Washington and tbe fathers of the Republic when we intelligent! render thanks on tbe national festival day for the peculiar blessings which he and they preserved to us. A LATER MAltMlOX.

Of all tbe keen self-reproaches which such a man as Parnell may be expected to feel at such atune as this, surely the thought that he baa put the cause of Irish Home Rule in peril must give the sharpest pane." Sorrow for bis partner in dishonor ia punish- ment acnte MOUihfprev selfish man than tbe great leader has shown himself to be but she is a iharer in SEVERAL SORTS of Black overcoats; none better than one of those medium wale worsteds at $15; silk lined $20. Then here are wider wales and perfectly plain Meltons and Cheviots, either silk lined or not, as your fancy inclines. At $18 and $20, a great variety of handsome coats in various fabrics and colors, lined with tine Italian cloth silk sleeve linings practically as good value for service as monev can buy. Silk linings cost more and wear out quicker, but the pure silk we use lasts long enough and they make a coat slip on and off "awfully easy;" $'25 to $30. Boys' Clothing.

An article much too long for reprinting concludes thus: But at first blush ft looks as If Mr.

Warren could fairly claim that he bss been "vindicated" and decline to carry out his reported Intention of resigning from the State Committee. It also looks as it an eminent independent leader bought, with bis innuencr, it a State office? from the Ring; yesterday and that he must not eomptain hereafter if he And bewas over reached in the bargain. bo sups witn the Devil must needs have a long The Ej-prtet, however. Is Inclined to take a hopeful view of the situation. The reloruiers a surprising? good hvnt yesterday in the fai.ti of adverse circumstances.

Most of tbe members of tbe general committee were chosen before election chosen, under a flag- of crucv by the machine. It is only surprising thut so many of th-nt were converted. Evidently than one year will be required to r-or ranize the party, but a good beginning baa r.een made. ine nepuniican piny in trie county may sulfer one more defeat at a general election, but it will be in line to help elect a Republican president in Mrl, "That little matter of the State Com mitteeman" ban a chilly sound. The hatchet is still above ground. By the way, who is the Messiah for whom the young braves are dancing at the corner of Exchange and Washington Borne of them are pretty near oft the reservation and there are no more rations to be given out just at present rixbrcATioit costs money. that it is decided by a United States Court jury that Superintendent Alien was not guilty of robbing because he had a bnndle of letters in his pocket at a critical time, it would seem to be only reasonable to ask who is going to make good to tho vindicated man the cost of proving his innocence? It is estimated that the two trials have cost Mr. Allen not less than 1C00, and that all he baa in the world will be swallowed up by these expenses.

Of course, "All thnt a man hafh bn will give for his life," aud most of us would give as much for the liberty that makes life worth living. None the less, it is a terrible hardship that a man in good standing in the com munity should be forced into poverty and lose all the hard earnings of many years ac the simple say-so, reckless or malicious, as the case may be, of a thief-hunter who "got the wrong man." It is worth thinking of that no man is quite safe from similar attacks and a similar stripping of his carefully stored savings. "Who shall make this loss good? It is every body's business to see justice done; nobody's business in particular to do more than pass judgment in a hotly controverted case. It ought to be tbe business of the Government, seeing that he incurred these attacks in its service, under accusation from one of its de tectives, backed up by the testimony of" employes. If Postmaster-General Wana-maker is convinced, as ha ought to lie, on the evidence laid before the Auburn jury that Mr.

Allen js innocent, he ought to be able to make good in some way the injuries he has suffered. A competent man would be secured to the service by his appointment to a responsible post, and that would be the best vindication possible an expression on tho part of his late employers the Government of complete confidence in his integrity and fitness for places of trust Mski the ghost dances unanlmoui- -With real ghosts. Liberal leader, England's "Grand Old Alan," has declared that he or Parnell most go, and FarneU has been asked by his associates to remain at the head of the Home Rule party and accepted the call.
