We think, however, that indiscriminate selling of all Argentine 'securities at the present moment is unwise. Tho Argentine Republic, and more particularly Buenos Ayres, has been going ahead too rapidly for tho last two or, three years, and there is a good deal of foolish speculation to be liquidated, no doubt, but the will soon recover from the effects of baring temporarily mortgaged its resources too heavily, provided no further reckless extension of its liabilities is permitted. The Cleroland makers maintain their quotations at a level much above tho market priooa, but at present they aro not doing much business so far as wo havo been ablo to loam. CliniST CHURCH, OXFORD, EAST END MISSION. TO THE EDITOR OF TIIE TIMES. Sir, you allow me a small space in your columns to appeal to old members of Christ Church, Oxford, on behalf of the new church of St. Frideswide, which is now rising in the miasion district supported by Christ Church in tbe East of London? The total cost of the site and a plain brick church will be 6,400. Of this only 900 are still wanted.

A sjiecial appeal for help in raising this sum is urgent, lieeause we have an offer from the'Bishop of London's Fund to give 200 more, provided the church be finished business has been concluded to arrive at 4s. 3d. on c.i.f. terms. HALIFAX, March 22.

Our" woollen market has been only thinly attended by buyers. Tbe general sale of goods for some time has been falling off, and. this week has been, the worst of all in that respect, especially with reference to plain worsted good of the medium and lower qualities and to medium tweeds. Manufacturers of fine worsted, keep well employed, as also do the producers of serge and low priced tweed. The shipping trade is about an average.

HULL, MARCH 22. The shipping trad of this port was fairly active daring tbe past week. No single steamer was stopped for fuel, and the outward tonnage was higher than in the same week last year. There was a (light falling off ia the inward tonnage, bat still import showed an increase almost all round. The wheat supplies were very large, tbe total for tbe week being There was also a large import of provisions of all kinds, tbe one branch of the import trade in which there was a decrease being wood.

In the export trade there wa a falling off in agricultural machinery, but a Iaro iocrcas in general rnichrnaau IiArscn or a Car Mail Steamer. Tho steamship Norseman, built for the Union Steamship Company (Limited) by Messrs. Day, Summers, and of Nortbam, Southampton, wa successfully launched from the yard of that firm on Saturday. KIDDERMINSTER, Xakb 22. Local attention ia tha wool market this week haa been prineipally directed to Um East India wool salas at Liverpool. With a fairly largo, eatalogos and good attendance too biddings were quite up to the last sales, and ona or two classes even slightly exceeded them: Tnis is tha more remarkable as the north of England tha wool market has been decidedly quiet, and tha tendency there has been te a slight giving way ia pries.

No doubt the effect of the Liverpool sale will bo to steady things more. Spinners are ia ranch the same position a a week ago. New business it sesree, but old contracts keep them moderately well employed. Carpet manufacturer generally ara bay, and a good many loom are running overtime. The resolution come to in the last week to advance prices is one which would have been fully justified months ago, having regard to the advance in material.

Buyer have had the advantage of placing their order on the old terms all the season up to tne 20th, from which date the new lists are in force, and there is an accord among manufacturers at the present time which is taken to augur well for tbe future. If the amalgamation scheme drops, a is now assumed to be all but certain, the manufacturers having declined the terms of issue proposed, the collapse will come at a time when there are apparently unproved prospect and better results before the trade. LEEDS. MARcn 22. Tbe woollen cloth trade is still in an unsettled state because of the threatened atep paga of the coal supply.

The home trade, on the whole, may now go on steadily, but some firms who used for tho most part to depend upoa their shipment to America are now really doing little in that direction. Prices keep steady for all good which merchants have in stock, and for all which are now from time to time ordered from mannfactarcra. Tho turnover of serge continues to be large. For fancy worsteds tho inquiry is only to a moderate extent, bat it is a trifle better than it has been for two or three weeks past. The sale of meltons ha improved.

The mantle cloth trade is decidedly better and manufacturer' price ara readily concurred in. The demand for print and fancy coatings is rather mora spirited, at remunerative prices. The blanket trade is quiet. LEICESTER, Mabch 22. Considerable weakness and want of confidence still prevail in the wool market, and the turnover in tbe leading descriptions of home grown produce is under tbe average, but quotations have not further declined.

There has been a fair degree of activity in tho cotton market to day, and, wbilo spot prices were firmly maintained, thero was a slight adrance in near futures.

Tbe previous estimate of sale i increased by 3.000 tales American old lata yesterday. The week' cotton receipt at the American porta were only 34,000 bale, which i 50,000 less than in the corresponding week last year. The receipts for the season thus far hare been 5,192,000 bales, which is 343,000 more than in the corresponding period of last year. The exports to Great Britain have been 2,448,000 bales, or 176,000 more than lat year. American cotton on the st has to day been fairly active at firm prices.

The ales comprised 6,800 bales American, 150 Brazilian, 500 Egyptian, 150 Peruvian, and 400 East Indian.

In the future department the tone waa steady for near month at an advanco of a half to one point, but remote positions were half a point easier. The market closed steady at about these changes. The late quotations were 6 7 64.1. to 8 64d. for March and March April deliveries 6 9 64.1.

It duration wa too brief to affect the views of boyers, and it speedy end justified their expectations. Quotations are for tha most part unaltered, but some sales have been made at a alight concession, and the tendency is now rather more in buyers' fsvour. A moderate business is going on for tbe borne trade, especially in heavy goods, at steady price. Printing cloths have been sold occasionally at rather' easier rates. Yarn have been in some request the last day or two at lower pricea than tho spinners will accept, but a limited business only is effected, and quotations are pretty well maintains.

NEWCASTLE ON TYNE, MARCH 22. Since the collapse of tho miners' strike the price of coal ha fallen, best Northumberland, steam being now quoted about 12s. other qualities in proportion. are beginning to decrease. There is no alteration in manufactured iron or in steel plates, but should the strike of engineers be long continued the demand for both must fall off. In the chemical trade price are considerably advanced, owing to the large demand from America, and soda crystals are on the basis of 2 10., whilst caustic soda has advanced to 13 for highest strength. The lead trade is very dull, and very little English lead is being brought to this market. In freight the tendency is towards ease, about 5.

The demand for curtains has.it anytbing.sllgntjy fallen ou.and there are a good many curtain frames which are not fully employed. Very little change has occurred in the Lever depart ment. The new duchesse laces have been favourably received, and there is some inquiry for Victoria laces I in sets, but the Valenciennes style still holds the I foremost place among cotton millinery goods. Cheap I torchon, liracant, isretoune, and loop laces are dull of sale. Tbe demand for silk laces has not appreciably improved, A good many silk nets, black and coloured, aro selling.

Tbe Atlas works are much Ereisedfor deliveries of the Purves flues, having recently ad nearly 1.000 on order at one time. There has been a marked falling off in new orders booked by the shipbuilders this year, and there does not appear much prospect of work in that material for next year's delivery. SIl'UOrSIIIRE (SOUTH), March 22. The iron trade in this district is steady the recent agitation in the coal trade has affected it to some slight degree.

There is a fair amount of work in hand and prices are fully maintained. In tbe bar trade a good business is bring done. Best marked bars are quote! at 9 medium qualities, 9, common unmarked bars 8 and in some cases 8 5s. In pig iron there is a steady trade being done at late rates. In the coal trade there has' been great excitement and prices have gone up.

Tbe demand is good. Manufacturers' fuel is in good demand at high rate. Ironstone and coke sell well. SUNDERLAND, Macch 22. Trade in the Wear district has been affected by strike.

Tbe coal trade strike sent orders this wsy and stiffened prices. The engineers' strike of tbe Tyne and Wear district caused tbo demand for coals to be ratber slacker for engineering purposes. Tbe strike goe on with no prospect of an early settlement. Tbe shipbuilding yards are steadily engaged, but tew orders are scarce. As a result of the stoppage of works for a week, the tone of the tinplate trade has somewhat improved. There has been a satisfactory increase in number of Inquiries for forward deliveries, and a check to the downward movement in prices. No improvement can be reported ia the metal market, prices continuing depressed.
