P'nneU davis times staff writer ven if you didn't go to camp last summer, watching the TV show Bug Juke wiE make you feel as if you did. The name is weird, that's true, but if you like watching MTVs Real World or Road Rules youH probably enjoy turning on Bug Juice on the Disney Channel. In fact, you may get hooked alter just one episode.

Watching real-life camp crushes, crises and calamities can be addictive. Twenty-seven kids, ages 12 to 15, were filmed last year for 56 days while spending their summer at Maine's Camp Waziyatah. Every day, almost all day long, they had cameras focused on their every single move. What resulted was a documentary split into 18 separate 30-minute episodes. The first five shows have already aired.

What you'll see is a glimpse of real life without MTV gimmicks such as rock music (though the Bug Juice theme song is rather snappy), crazy camera angles and gritty home movie cinematography. "I don't think the cameras had any effect on us," 15-year-old Stephanie, one of the campers, said in a phone interview. "I don't think anyone reacted differently because the cameras were there." In one of the early episodes, Stephanie and another camper have a disagreement Stephanie ends up crying. If all caught on tape. "I guess the cameras are there to capture camp, and crying is a part of camp, whether it's crying because you're going home or crying because you're in a fight," she said. Stephanie lives in Michigan and is what you'd call a professional camper.

(Because the campers are not actors, the Disney Channel would not release their last names so mat the kids could retain their privacy.) She's been going to camp madcaps at FM. "But, after the first couple of days, you really got used to it and barely noticed they were there. At first, it was kinda odd." The show's name, Bug Juice, is kind of odd, too.

It's the slang term for the red, super-sweet powdered drink concoction that campers drink morning, noon and night "I think the name is really characteristic of camp," Stephanie said. "You hear "bug juice' and you automatically think of camp; at least I do. I've been to three different camps and they've had bug juice at aD tliree." Stephanie said she really has liked the Bug Juice episodes she has seen but admitted: "Ifs kinda weird to be a character. All I am to (viewers) is someone on TV and that kinda freaks me out" In addition to showing camp activities like swimming, basketball and talent shows, Bug Juke incorporates one-on-one interviews with the kids and counselors. If in those interviews that viewers really start to connect with the campers.

Kids will want to watch Bug Juice, according to Stephanie, "because for us, ifs like watching the Real World. But we can't relate to (the Real World cast) because they are so much older.
