But the local 13- to-15-year-old all-stars took out their frustrations in the next game, a 20-0 win over host Mulberry. PONYTAILS IN WORLD SERIES: West Pasco has spent the past two weeks practicing for the DSL Ponytails World Series that begins Aug.

1 at Alexandria, La. The local all-stars (ages 10-12) won their third state title on July 7 with a 10-3 defeat of Hernando. West Pasco finished third in last year's series at Aiken, S.C., and was the runner-up at Dennison, Texas, in 1995. But this year, manager Steve Simon feels his ballclub is a strong contender for the DSL World Series championship, which would be West Pasco's first in the Ponytails division since 1980. That optimistic outlook stems from the fact that West Pasco fields four players with DSL World Series experience.

Simon's daughter, Stefanie, is making her third straight appearance and Melissa Adair, Nicole Orlando and Lisa Serra are playing in their second national tourney. "I've got veterans," Steve Simon said. "The other teams will not have that many veterans." The emphasis at recent practices has been on conditioning, the manager said, to prepare players for afternoon games in which the temperature could climb to 100 degrees. Vmii murl rtraettnf ikie rminAn A 3-1 loss to Hernando left the West Pasco Belles All-Stars one game shy of the Dixie Softball League state title for the second straight year.

Last season, West Pasco had its string of 14 consecutive DSL World Series appearances halted. West Pasco last won the national championship in 1983, which capped a run of three consecutive DSL World Series crowns. Both West Pasco and Hernando advanced to last week's state tourney by winning their brackets in the regional playoffs. Host Mulberry was the third Belles team in the state series. "It was a pitching duel till the last inning," West Pasco coach Bob Bor-ges said of his team's loss to Hernando in last Thursday's final.

"I feel like either team could have went (to the DSL World Series). It was pretty evenly matched." Pitcher Bridget Murphy, who won three games in the regionals, was saddled with the loss in the championship game. Hernando starter Chrissy Hartley earned the win by tossing a two-hitter, striking out four and walking one. Hernando's Gina Pepe snapped a 1-1 tie when she scored on Ana Men-a's bunt in the top of the seventh One $1 ticket per coupon. I i -j, rmi I With Coupon Only I 8616 U.S.

Timet Correspondent NEW PORT RICHEY De spite cloudy skies, early rains anc the roll of distant thunder, Keith Palmgren still was able to shine. Palmgren had three hits, including two home runs, to lead Stadium, Steaks, Spirits and Sports to a 14-9 victory over Florida Icehouse in the Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department Division I co-ed softball finals at Mitchell Field last Sunday.

The dramatic extra-inning game was expected to be close considering the seven-year rivalry between the two teams. And it was. Florida Icehouse faced its nemesis for the second time this season with the hope of avenging an early-season loss, its only defeat going into the finals. It appeared in the early innings that Icehouse would return the favor. Palmgren put Stadium ahead in the top of the first when he belted a two-run homer.

But Icehouse sent eight batters to the plate and chiseled out four runs on four singles in the bottom of the first inning to answer the quick Stadium start. "We weren't nervous about being behind even though we do lead games early," Stadium coach Jim Johnson said. "This team has been together for eight years, so we knew we were able to keep the game close." The Icehouse idded two more runs and was aheat! 6-4 going into the fifth inning. But Stadium came back with the long bomb. Johnson hit a homer and Palmgren smashed his second of the game, another two-run shot, in the fifth to even the score (7-7) after the regulation seven innings.

Stadium kept its composure, rode the late-inning momentum into the extra frame, and scored seven runs in the eighth to put the game away. Under extra-inning rules, the eighth inning starts with the last batter from the seventh on second base. Stadium not only scored runner Tom Stager but added more with a three-run homer by Johnson. Florida Icehouse loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth but was able to score only one run. "This has been a bitter rivalry for so long now," said Florida Icehouse coach Richie Beason.

Unable to do so, the card manufacturer has come close by securing a Women's National Basketball Association license to produce its trading cards exclusively. Pinnacle is the only one of the big four card manufacturers not to own a license to produce NBA cards, and it's no secret Pinnacle CEO Jerry Meyer has coveted the precious contract since taking over the company in the early 1990s when it was known as Score. C0L1ECTIBLES The NBA has traditionally been the most cautious about granting new card licenses, and isn't sure whether the market can support another one.

OF CORKED BATS AND DEATH THREATS: Death threats forced cancellation of a scheduled autograph appearance by Los Angeles Dodgers rookie second baseman Wilton Guerrero at a card show in Oxnard, on June 7. Guerrero was to sign for one hour at the Esplanade Mall, about 60 miles north of Los Angeles. When dealers, collectors and fans arrived, a sign said that due to numerous threats against the player and similar threats against promoter Eric Beckerman, Guerrero would not be appearing. Guerrero was suspended for using a corked bat during a game a few days prior to the scheduled appearance and has seen his popularity suffer.
