The Senate Finally Passas the As-sombly Bill. ONE O'CLOCK, NO DUEL THIS TIME, Belmont Scorns Blaine and tha Ex-Premier Returns the Compliment. A LETTER TO THE COMMITTEE. By National Associated Press. Washington-, April 20.

There have boen all sorts of rumor of an Iaipendtn3 duel between Belmont and Blaine, growing oat of the scene before the Bblpherd Committee, but It Is stated today that Gen. M. 0. Butler, the wooden-legged Senator from Booth Carolina, has averted a hoatlla meeting. Belmont has written a letter to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, In which be In the examination yesterday and the days immediately preceding, provocation ao grow and persistent was offered me by tha witness testifying before the committee that I was led to language which, although unparliamentary, did properly dcfcrlbe his conduct and my appreciation of his character.

Tee witness under examination has seen fit to criticise questions addressed by me on a farmer occasion to another witness, firef, because quotation marls appeared In tha printed record of Buch questions, the responsibility for whloh I disavowed, calling; attention at the same time to the fact that the form of the question negatived the idea that I was quoting from those dispatches; and, secondly, because ot the interpretation p'aced by me on those dispatches. This was properly a matter for argument, and the witness bad every opportunity to present and explain his construct'on the dispatches signed by him. He choee rather to Insist upon a change of my opinion respecting the moaning of the dispatches, and when I declined to make a chsage, my belief being fositiva and well founded, bethought It proper on a public occasion to nee language personally offensive. It was my desire and purpose yesterday to put an end to further continuance of those personalities before the committee, and I therefore referred to a less public treatment thereof by myself. Hiving been suffprieed into making a reply in tbe presence of the committee of a character such as seems to mv deliberate judgment would have beea elsewhere uuder the circumstances entirely proper, and which expresses my opinion perfectly, nothing farther in the nature of private or personal notice ot the witness is required of ine.

Thess unparliamentary personalities sbould have no plaoe on the records of the committee, and I cneerf ally Ieavo the method of dealing with them to the direction ot your body. It Is cot thought that Belmont will resign from tbe committee. A Bold Abduction. Philadelphia, April 29. T. Stewart's Stock. Rumors bave been about for some time past to the efl'est th-st a syndicate consisting of a combination seven leading dry gcods bonces in Bnfifalo, Rochester, Providence, Cleveland, Hartford, Springfield aud Worcester have- been ia negotiations for the purchase of the stock of A. T. Btewart and that cow thoee negotiations are In a fair way to come to ft favorable conclusion.

Adam, Meldrum Anderson, tbe Buffalo firm mentioned in connootion with the ruatior, state that they have no information on the tubject to give. J. Adam, of the firm of J. N. Adam was interviewed on the subject tbis morning by a reporter of the Evebkg News.

He seemed to be rather amused at the idea of the rumored negotiations and said: "I have no personal knowledge ot anything ef tbe kind going op. I thiuk that people are greatly misled by that word syndicate. That a syndicate has been formed for the Eurpose of buying out that stock I do not ell eve. As a matter of fact there are seven extensive dry goods firms In this city who adopted, about two years ago, a system of havlcg th same buyers in the New Yerk market, and I believe that tbe plan has worked very well, These firms came to be known In commercial clrclej, as much for a joke as for anything else, B3 a syndicate. There Is one of these firms in each city, esd It Is not impossible that the men buying for sn.ot them in New York should be negotiating for the stock.

But I have- no reason to believe that tbey are doing so more than other extensive dry goods establishments la the country. I. myse have received a letter from tbe firm of A. T. Stewart with whom I have always dealt very extensively, Inviting me to go to New York to purchase their stock, and similar letters have undoubtedly been sent to other men throughout the country.

All extensive dry gooii firms are negotiating and- speculating on the result, and what is to be the outcome of it I cm eure I cannot tell."
