'Bug lab' gets funding 3005 30th Vernon, BC Call 542-5371 (Burnaby) The first lab in North America dedicated to using insects as "detectives" to solve major crimes will receive $214,000 to expand its work in forensic entomology. Forensic entomology is the study of insects found on human remains to determine time of death. "This innovative science gives police another tool to help investigate and solve serious, violent crime in B.C.," Dosanjh said Attorney General Ujjal Dosanjh.

"After three days, insect evidence is the only way to determine how much time has passed since the victim's death. In homicide investigations, that can be a crucial piece of information." The province is providing the money for the lab while Simon Fraser University is providing lab space for Gail Anderson, a criminology professor and recognized expert in the field of forensic entomology. Anderson said knowing when death occurred can help police focus their efforts, eliminate suspects in a homicide investigation and identify others as a possibility, or help track the victim's last movements. The lab will be located in the criminology department at SFU and is expected to be fully operational by next year. Tot park on the move (Merritt) The park that has become a drug user's haven may be a residential lot in the future.

The Nicola-Similkameen School District has decided the Lions Tot Lot Park on Cranna Crescent, which is now often covered with broken bottles, syringes and condoms, should be relocated to an area by Diamond Vale Elementary School. Board chairman Gordon Swan said the Cranna Crescent location should be turned into a residential lot in the future. The City of Merritt has also acknowledged the park is not meeting the needs of the neighbourhood in terms of the preschool playground equipment, amenities and location. In return for moving the park to the school field, the city is prepared to erect signage on a fence it will make indicating the playground is for pre-school age children only and off limits to students during school hours. The fence will be six-feet-tall and with one entry gate, dividing the pre-school playground from the school playing field.

And to make the area more of a park setting, the city will plant trees and put in picnic tables, park benches as well as garbage cans. Skeleton still baffles (Chase) Nearly four years after its discovery, the identity of a human skeleton found near the Squilax Bridge continues to elude the Chase RCMP and the coroner's office. On Dec. 3, 1995, two hunters found human skeletal remains in a bushy area two kilometres east of the bridge on Highway 446. An autopsy revealed the remains to be those of a Caucasian male, about 40 to 50 years old and about five-foot-eight.

Considered a possible transient, it is believed he died sometime between May and September 1995. The remains show two old injuries, a broken nose and broken right shoulder. Found at the scene were the following items: one pair of white socks, one pair of Hush Puppy-type shoes, one pair of men's casual blue slacks, one blue baseball cap with distinctive, commemorative pins on the peak and one men's Astrosonic LCD quartz watch, silver in colour. Anyone with information on the identity of this individual is asked to call the Chase RCMP at 679-322 1 Water grant flows in (Salmon Arm) The District of Salmon Arm has received a $37,500 grant to assist with planning for future water and sewer needs. The money has come from the provincial government and is part of a three-year community infrastructure program announced in this year's provincial budget.

In Salmon Arm, $10,000 is for a waste water treatment plan study, $10,000 for a new lake intake design which will be located deeper in the lake to provide water capacity to 30,000 people, $10,000 is for a transmission supply study which will review water supply to the Salmon River Valley and $7,500 is for a water conservation study.
