20 Wednesday, September 25, 1991 The Morning Star AISLE SEAT pretty glad that they didn't have the ability to write themselves into this plot. Quite simply, there wouldn't be too much to do. Aside from Candy taking up all the screen time staggering through silly action sequences, plus all the mad plot twists, there's a mess of cameo appearances. Die hard "Saturday Night Live" fans will note actor Charles Rocket. If the name doesn't seem familiar, it shouldn't.

Rocket lasted all but one season on SNL in the early eighties, and with the lack of talent he demonstrates here, it's easy to see why he hasn't become a household name. Raymond Burr is also along, looking totally out of place as a greedy tycoon, and if you look really close, you'll catch a glimpse of Margot Kidder. But the best appearance, which may just about the only big laugh in the movie, is by handsome guy Robert Wagner, which catches Candy off guard. "What are you doing You don't to daytime TV!" "Delirious" tries to be cute, daring, hilarious, satirical, and slapstick all at the same time. Unfortunately none of it works, soap operas are bad news, and I think John Candy understands that now.

But such talent will easily bounce back, and even if he doesn't he's got one heck of a day job. (At least there's one Rocket' that has found success.) Out of a possible five stars, I'll give "Delirious" a one and a half. The comedy is currently playing at Poison Place Cinema One. soap he works for. At first, it's unbelievably scary, realizing that the incompetent dolts he invented actually exist, especially cornball doctor David Rasche.

"He's operating on cries Candy. "Bit he's an he's not even a good actor!" But the fantasy takes a drastic shift when Candy discovers he's able to write himself into the plot, and pull off gutsy, heroic stunts, in an effort to win the heart of Samms, while it's obvious to to only the other cast members but to the audience, that he belongs with quirky little Mariel Hemingway. The longer it goes on, the more frustrating and absurd it gets. just like a real soap opera. Lawrence J.

Cohen and Fred Freeman, the head writers behind "Delirious" are probably premise happens to set up a rather amusing coincidence to most of the male population on our planet. Candy plays the head writer of a floundering soap, which has about one thing going for it Emma Samms' breasts. Oh sure, I could mention Samms comedic ability, at times very evident in the picture, but with her endless wardrobe of low-cut gowns and tight sweaters, her prominent bosom seems to overshadow (no pun intended) everything else. (Despite her overbearing bodily presence though, Samms character is by far the best, as a campy rich, beautiful vamp who, according to Candy, "was voted Homecoming Queen four years in a The nightmare begins for big John when he's knocked unconscious, and wakes up to find himself living the plot of the By Jason Armstrong Morning Star Critic The high percentage of soap operas currently in existence is inane enough. Attempting to create a satire of them would seem absolutely fruitless.

Why then, so far this year, do we have not one, but two screen efforts to mock the lowest form of television? I'm still scratching my head on this one. Earlier in the summer came Sally Field's often creative, but mostly ridiculous comedy, exploring the relationships and traumas of a burnt-out daytime queen. A few laughs, sure, but really, really stupid. Now with big burly funnyman John Candy draws his own impression of soap operas a giant nightmare. Along the way, he was a gun-fighter, a drunk, a wild man, a married man, and an Indian scout for General Custer, and was the only white survivor of the battle of Little Big Horn. Crabbe's obviously hazy memory, combined with raucous humor and ridiculous characters lead the interviewer and the viewer to realize that not everything Crabbe says is true. However, the general gist of the story concerning Custer and the Indians, is true. Watch for some hilarious cameo performances including Faye Dunaway as a not-too-moral preacher's wife; Chief Dan George as Crabbe's grandfather; and a bravura performance by Richard Mulligan as General Custer.
