A glance at the map will show that Tampa is situated in a bight, or inland curve, on the Florida West or Gulf Coast. It is this bight that save Tampa from helne in the direct path of recurving hurricanes or cyclones.

Are Carefully Watched During the hurricane season, which Is from July to October, a careful watch Is on weather conditions for the sUghtest indication of cyclonic formations. The West Indian cyclone usually moves westward in the longitude of eastern Cuba, and when north of Cuba moving westward or over Cuba or the Caribbean Sea, it will recurve. It is the place of this recurving that marks the onward progress of the cyclone, all of them practically occurring between the 23th and 3nh parallel. In the study of cyclones of recent years. It has been shown that, after recurving, evclones either pass esst of the South Atlantic Coast or cros the Culf Coast line westward, before passing to the east again and out on the Atlantio Ocean, according to the location of the high area.

In either case. Tamoa Is out of the general track of the cyclone, the eastward movement being far removed, while the westward movement escapes by many miles the bight In which Tampa lays. Tampa Is Fortunate Hurricanes pass over a wide belt In the latitude of the Gulf States, the proa of reenrvature covering thlrty degrees of longitude, whence comes the chief uncertainty of forecasting their approach to the I'nited States, but In the hurricanes and" evclones that have passed across the Gulf in the past It would seem that, for some Tnnon onexplained. that part of the Florida West Coast in which Tampa is situated escapes their fury. Whether this Is due to air currents or from other causes has not been figured out, but the fact remains that these cv-clonlc do pass to the west or far to the east of Tampa.

With the advantages the Government Weather Bureau has the present time, by reason of vessels at se being able communicate with the land and therefore with the Weather Bureau, more accurate data as to the movements of hurricanes can be kept, and with this to aid them, the Government weather experts expect to mane a closer study of cy-lonlc movements during the coming season than they have heretofore been able to make, the main object always being to be in a position to give timely notice of the approach of to those in the district over which they will pass, as well as to navigators and those interested In the handling of vessels. Storm Warning Stations In this connection the storm warning stations along the coast are expected to do even more excellent service this year than thev have done in the past.
