Tb preseat meeting waa tb first on which tbe directors bad met the shareholders without asking them to subscribe a further amount of share capital, the balance of which was issned last year at a premium of 10s. a share.

The thairman.in aoring theadoptiua of the report, expressed the thanks o7 the directors for the cordial support they bad received from tbe abarebolders in with their application to Parliament for a Bill for further power. If the Bill passed, as they hoped and believed it would, they would, on undertaking the sew business eugbt, cease to be the only parely accident company in existence, as they were at present. Next year they hoped tbey would be abl to pay tbe dividend without having recourse to this fund, and, as a matter of fact, they would be indisposed xu do so, presuming tnat tne claims for compensation should be as heavy as bad been the tse in the past year. But for this liberal policy their reserve fund.weuld bare been very much larger than it was at the present time. He would like aa expreasien of opinion from the meeting as to whether or not tbe time bad arrived when they might increase the taoxtmum liability they at present undertook as regarded any one insurer. The maximum amount at the present time waa 1,000 on one life, except in a case where a maa might take out a general accident policy for 1,000 and buy a railway ticket for another similar sum. lir.

B. Y. Beran seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr. Willis afterwards expressed the opinion that tb time bad come when they ought to follow the lines which had been pursued by other companies and increase the maximum amount they were ready to undertake on any one life, as by tbis means they would attract a wealthy class of insurers to them.

to bag of a cazea ahnmps. Bociett of Authors. A. general meeting of the Incorrorated Society of Authors was held yesterday afternoon in the large hall of the Royal Medical and Chirtirgical Society 20, Uanover square, Mr. Kider Haggard, chairman of the society, presidior.

There were also preseat Sir Walter Besant. Mr. J. M. Lely, Mr.

A. W. i Deckett, Mr. Mackenzie Bell, Mr. Brsm Stoker, Lady Colin Campbell, and others.

The chair; man, in a brief adlress, aonoonoea a far reaching alteration in the constitution of the society bad been carried out during the past year, five ladies Mrs. Lynn Linton, Miss Eleanor A. Ormerod, Miss Flora L. Shaw, Mrs. Humphry Wari, anJ Miss Cbarlott M.

Yonee having been added to the council. Th society had nad to lament the itns bf not a few members and strong fopporters, including Miss Mathilda Blind, Sir J. A. Crowe, Sir J. Erie Erichsen, Sir B.

W. Richardjon, Mr. George Dn Manrier, and Professor Middleton. The elections to the society during the year numbered 208, which the committee considered very fatisfactory. The society had now an income of over 1,200 a year, and a capital of near 600, 450 of whieb was a legacy.

The cases in whictt tbe society intervened between publisher or editor and author were 110 daring the year, and advice and assistance were given to between 800 and V00 members. It had been suggested that the managing committee were not sufficiently representative of the numbers, and at the last annual meeting it was resolved that papers should be; sent out for the nomination of candidates for a sub committee to consider what changes should be made in the constitution of tbe society. Not a single name, however, was proposed, althaugh all tbo members were communicated with. In conclusion, Mr. Rider Haggard urged the need of ciprit de torpt and unity amotg authors.

The society existed to help the large class of not very snecessfnl authors. Authorship was not so remunerative as. for instance. Art tie exploration, and he appealed to those authors wbo nad prosperea to neip tneir less fortunate bretbren by joining the soefcty. The society was not a warlike body defirous of quarrels between publishers and authors.

It employed ieaceful means wherever possib'e. Mr. Perry Coste advocated the division of the members into faculties representing various branches of literary work, such a poetry, history, fiction, with tb view of giving each faculty some representation on tbe anaging committae. The cbairman undertook that the matter should be considered. Mr.

Percy Ames moved that the committee be reauested to take the sense of the societv as to the desirability of publishing a lilt of the members. This was carried nnanimously. A vote of thanks to th chair man, moved by air. Anthony. Hope Hawkins and seconded by Sir W.

Besant, concluded the proceedings. It' may be mentioned that the report of the committee of management shows that the society has a balance in hand of 135. view of his approaching diparture for the Continent and Australia, Mr. Mark Hambonrg gave a pianolorte recital of quite excessive length in the Qneen'a' hall on Tuesday alter noon, when uiree works in sonata form, one of the two books of Brabrcs's Pagantnl Taruttons. and nearly a dozen shorter pieces were given. The young player, clever as te as yet tne maturity wnien, it is to te hoped, will some day make his interpretations of the class'cs interesting in the highest degree, and alike in Beethoven's Cat sonata from 00. 31 the dainty scherzo in which was hammered out with unnecessarily savage emihasis in Schumann's" Faseh iegsschwank aus ami' in Chopin's sonata ia flat minor rourh was left to be desired in the way of sty! snd trne refinement.

At th same time, Mr. Hambourg's possession of certain qualities which almost argue genius is undeniable, and as an exhibition' of virtuosity the variations by Brahms were admirable. Two pieces by Leschetixky, one a clever and effective gique i 1 were introduced for the first time, as well as Paderewski's pretty minuet in A. A number of other pieces, among them specimens of Tausig's travesties of Bach and Dee enico Scarlatti, were played witn snceess, and tne andienc was numerous enough to justify the choice of so large a hall.
