Entertainment 2B TIMES MONDAY, MAY 19, 1997 FLASH flanr, classic craw cam) still rock fains By LOGAN NEILL Timet Pop Music Critic MUSIC REVIEW Jackson's baby, mom an ocean apart Michael Jackson and his 3-month-old son, Prince Michael Jackson reportedly are living in France without the child's mother. People magazine says Debbie Rowe has returned to her job as an assistant to a Beverly Hills dermatologist. She is living in the same Van Nuys, apartment she had before becoming pregnant and marrying Jackson. Jackson reportedly calls his wife twice daily from France, where he bought an estate. Rowe has been flying there every other weekend to visit, the magazine reports.

Yo, Adrian, did Rocky really wed? Did Sylvester Stallone secretly marry girlfriend Jennifer Flavin on the roof of a London hotel? The star of Rambo and Rocky and. the 28-year-old former model aren't saying, but Britain's Sunday tabloids are sure. "Rocky's Rooftop Bride," headlined the News of the World. "Stallone Weds at Hotel On The Sly," said the Sunday Mirror. "Sly Old Stallone weds in secret at the Porchester," trumpeted the Express on Sunday.

According to the papers, the celebrity couple exchanged wedding vows at the Dorchester Hotel in a rooftop civil ceremony Saturday. A small group of friends attended. In other news Melrose Place star Heather Locklear, who is four months pregnant, will have a girl. Producer Aaron Spelling, however, hasn't decided yet how his star's pregnancy will play on the show, People magazine reports. The season's finale was recently shot and the crew will have a few weeks off to come up with a fitting fate for Locklear, who is pregnant with her first child.

It is also the first child for husband Richie Sambora of the rock group Bon Jovi. Sir Paul McCartney took to the Internet on Saturday for a live chat with some of the 3-million fans who bombarded him with questions ranging from his tastes in modern music to his preferred underwear. The former Beatle, knighted by Queen Elizabeth this year for his services to pop music, revealed that the Fab Four would probably have gotten together again if John Lennon had not been murdered in 1980. McCartney said his greatest achievement is his four children. CLEARWATER Thirty-five years after he was plucked from the cozy confines of the Hamburg clubs that the Beatles played before they became a worldwide phenomenon, it's pretty clear the Ringo Starr is happiest on stage behind his drums, kicking out a steady beat.

The former Beatle settled in for much of Sunday night as the anchor of a two-hour extravaganza that included a bevy of British pop legends: Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Gary Brooker and Simon Kirke who gave the sold-out audience a heavy dose of rock 'n' roll flashbacks. Ringo and his All-Starr Band enjoyed the benefit of knowing that, in all likelihood, they were incapable of doing wrong for a crowd that gave standing ovations during most of the show. However, nostalgic sentimentalities aside, the six-piece band proved to be cohesive and full of surprises. Starr led the proceedings off with a quick one-two of It Don't Come Easy and Act Naturally. With his close-cropped hair, the gaunt Starr strolled around the stage in animated style.

He was occasionally a bit off-key, but it was nonetheless fun to see his reaction to the audience as they chimed in on Beatles favorites Yellow Submarine (they even mimicked the sound effects) and Wanna Be Your Man. With Starr settling into the background behind his drum kit, the rest of the band took turns driving the audience down memory lane. For most fans, former Procol Harum keyboardist Brooker, ex-Cream bassist Bruce and former Free drummer Kirke seemed to be the unknown factors of the evening. None has spent much time in the limelight in recent years. However, each was able to summon just the right taste from their heydays to make the most of their effort.

Brooker doled out the ballad Whiter Shade of Pale with finesse, and his monstrous version of Conquistador was superbly rendered as well. Kirke delivered the anthemic All Right Now as the audience pounded the floor with stomping feet. Bruce was the messenger for past Cream efforts, sending well-executed versions of Feel Free and Sunshine Of Your Love. However, Frampton consistently proved to be the man of the hour. Now sporting short, mostly gray hair, the guitarist provided the sparkplug for much of the music with soaring leads and clear, crisp vocal work.

His songs, Show Me The Way and Baby I Love Your Way, brought the crowd to its feet to echo the choruses back to him. What was most impressive perhaps was the way each band member took up the mantle of a bandmate's songs, adding distinctive touches here and there. Frampton's scorching solo in Sunshine Of Your Love was enthralling. Brooker's fluent keyboard work was equally impressive. The former Beatle led his All-Starr Band through a sold-out performance. Glitzy Cannes festival gives top honors to pensive films New York Timet Nick Cassavetes, the filmmaker's son. "I love this country," Penn said, accepting his award at a ceremony in which a great many of France's most glamorous and estimable actors participated. Presenters included Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Beart, Fanny Ardant and Sandrine Bonnaire. Jeanne Moreau was the evening's host, and Isabelle Adjani, very much the model of haute elegance, was president of the jury.

The jury (with members including Tim Burton, Michael Ondaatje, Paul Auster, Gong Li, Mike Leigh, Nanni Moretti and Mira Sorvino) had been rumored to be a far from harmonious one, and it certainly made awards all over the stylistic map. The prize for direction went to Wong Kar-Wai (Chungking Express), whose nimble, flashy technique is shown off in Happy Together, about gay lovers from Hong Kong who wind up in Argentina. In an entirely different universe is Western, directed with warm, laid-back wit by Manoel Poirier about two hapless buddies trying to meet women in western France. Ms. Adjani stiffened noticeably when Poirier, looking as delightfully raffish as one of his film's characters, nervously kissed her cheek after he received the Jury Prize.

camera simply observes the man driving and talking. Kiarostami's great accomplishment is in turning this spare, philosophical film into something much richer than any synopsis makes it sound. Imamura, director of Vengeance Is Mine and The Ballad of Narayama, and a previous Palme d'Or winner, brings a quirky, delicate tone to his account of a convicted killer who tries to rebuild his life and whose dearest confidant is an eel in a tank. Sean Penn was voted best actor for his boisterous, tender performance in She's So Lovely, a time-capsule revival of John Cassavetes' style as directed by CANNES, France Having celebrated its 50th birthday with an inordinate show of celebrity glitter, the Cannes International Film Festival reasserted its claim to seriousness in awarding top honors Sunday to two quiet, pensive films. This year's Palme Or was shared by Abbas Kiarostami's Taste of Cherries and Shohei Imamu-ra's Unagi (The Eel).

Kiarostami's film consists almost entirely of conversations between a man contemplating suicide and strangers who, he hopes, can be persuaded to help him accomplish that end. Often the The Fifth Element starring Bruce Willis held onto the top box office spot for a second weekend with in ticket sales nationwide, according to industry estimates Sunday.
