By TIM GRANT Tlmea Staff Witter CARROLLWOOD When bargain-hungry customers wanted to compare prices at two of the leading discount clothing chains, it used to be a short drive from the TJMaxx in Northdale Court to the Marshalls in the Carrollwood Commons shopping center. But after Saturday, Marshalls will be out of the picture. The store at the corner of Dale Mabry Highway and Ehrlich Road will close, not necessarily because of poor sales, but because the Marshalls chain recently was bought by the company that owns TJMaxx. of Fra-mingham, paid $550-million for the Marshalls chain in 1995, the company announced its plans to close 200 Marshalls or TJMaxx stores in areas where only one of the two stores dominate. Industry analysts have been speculating the combined chain would close up to a quarter of its stores that are competing with each other. So far, the Carrollwood store is the only Marshalls in the Tampa Bay area that is closing. A Marshalls farther south on Dale Mabry Highway at Waters Avenue in the Fashion Square shopping center is remaining open. While their customers may be similar, there are some differences in the goods the two chains sell. Marshalls, for instance, carries men's suits, but TJMaxx does not. Marshalls sells costume jewelry, while TJMaxx sticks to fine jewelry.
