TIMES FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1995 It's life or death for child-biting dog Learning about germs and waste t. II'- 4 i Beethoven, especially since the dog had nipped the girl on the ear six months earlier. "You can't blame the parents for the dog bite," Assistant County Attorney Betsy Steg countered in her closing arguments. The attack and ensuing court case have made enemies of Sabates and the Aliens, who previously were friends on Spring Oak Avenue in the Groves development on Alderman Road. Sabates, a single mother who has owned 5-year-old Beethoven since he was a puppy, said the dog has never had a problem with other children.

"This is not an aggressive dog," she said. Both of the Aliens got teary when they described their daughter's injuries and the family's trauma since the girl was bitten on Labor Day. According to court records, the dog inflicted a 1-inch-deep cut on Julia's neck, tore a flap of skin from her scalp and left numerous bite marks on her head and neck. Julia's neck become infected, and she spent six days in All Chil Timet photo BILL SERNE Linda Masters, manager of Infection Control at Bayfront Medical Center, shows fourth-graders from Azalea Elementary School how germs are spread Thursday. The pupils toured the hospital and watched a slide show about how the hospital disposes of medical waste.

The STARS class and teacher Susan Pomeroy had written letters to the hospital after a Times story detailed improper disposal of waste by hospitals at the county dump. dren's Hospital, where she developed a hernia. "We believe it was related to the throwing up, all the crying, all the pain she endured," Mrs. Allen said. The child is scarred, the parents said, and she may require surgery to repair nerve damage that has paralyzed her lower left lip.

Although there was conflicting testimony about what happened Sept. 4, the witnesses agreed that Beethoven, a 145-pound black and tan Great Dane, was chained in his garage when Julia was bitten. The attack occurred while Sabates, the Aliens, another neighbor and several of their children were chatting in Sabates' driveway. Wolfe disputed whether the county followed proper procedures when it ordered Beethoven's death, but Dr. Kenny Mitchell, director of county Animal Services, defended his agency's investigation.

"We had to make a decision that would protect other kids from attack by this dog, and perhaps from being killed," he testified. Prosecutors insist they made no deals with Adams on his escape charge. would be a general understanding that after testifying for the state in the aforementioned cases, I would be sentenced to a non-prison sanction, such as community control and probation." By not making a specific promise, Adams wrote, prosecutors ensured that "my credibility as a state witness would not be tainted." However, prosecutors have insisted they made no deals with Adams on his escape charge. But in exchange for his testimony against Sanders, they did agree to give him house arrest for the four felonies he committed after escaping. Ironically, Adams has testified in only one case, that of Knopp.

But Adams recognized one of the jurors, which caused a mistrial. Knopp's retrial is not scheduled until next year. Morgan's trial is also not until next year. The burglary case ended with a guilty plea, so Adams' testimony was not necessary. And when Sanders went to trial, prosecutors never called Adams as a witness.

Keswick school, Moody parting ways (Seminole Park I Blvd. wanted the programs offered there to continue. Keswick hopes to lease the conference center to a Christian organization that would continue the retreats, music programs and seminars that have occurred there during the past 33 years. Moody Bible Institute, founded in 1886, is one of the country's oldest and most respected fundamentalist Bible schools. Phil Fogle, director of the Moody Keswick Conference Center, said the institute decided to break its ties with the Seminole campus and conference center after a yearlong study that suggested Moody concentrate on its original mission: training young people to be ministers, teachers, Christian musicians and missionaries.

The conference center currently operates on an annual budget of about $700,000, Fogle said, and employs up to 100 people during the prime retreat season from January through April. None of these changes will affect Moody Bible Institute's WKES-FM 101.5 radio station, which broadcasts from the site. By AMY WALSH Timet Stan Writer PALM HARBOR The life of a Great Dane named Beethoven rests in the hands of a county judge. The dog is at the center of a case that pits neighbor against neighbor and, according to lawyers' arguments Thursday, pits property rights against public safety. Pinellas County Animal Services ordered Beethoven put to death after he bit a 4-year-old Palm Harbor girl Sept.

4, but his owner is appealing. After a final hearing Thursday, Judge Henry Andringa said he would announce today whether Beethoven lives or dies. The dog has been kept at the county's animal shelter since the attack. "The real issues in this case are common sense and lack of it," said Joe Wolfe, the attorney for Beethoven's owner, Lorraine Sabates. The split from Moody won't change much about the school's day-to-day operations, Barber said, but the acquisition of the adjacent property at 5700 100th Way gives the school more flexibility to expand later.

Moody Bible Institute, based in Chicago, decided to give Keswick the school property. Moody also planned to close the conference center, which opened in 1962 and hosts about 40,000 people annually at Christian retreats and conferences. The conference center property, including a 48-room lodge, a 550-seat chapel and three homes, was put up for sale. Keswick Christian School officials on Thursday reached a deal to buy the conference center from Moody for $600,000.

Keswick headmaster Don Barber said the school will begin fund raising in the spring to pay for the land, which sits on Lake Kersey. "We have to have a capital campaign," Barber said. In seven months, Adams popped up as a state witness in two Pasco murder cases and one from Pinellas, as well as a burglary case. Defense attorneys have accused him of fabricating evidence. Adams' first murder case was that of Kristopher Sanders, accused of shooting a man to death in Pasco County.

Adams said he helped Sanders do legal research and Sanders gave him a detailed description of the killing. Then Adams befriended Thomas Knopp, who was charged with shaking an 8-month-old baby to death in Pasco. Again he helped with legal research, and again he elicited a confession, according to Adams. Then Adams met Kevin Morgan of Clearwater, who stands accused of the child-abuse murder of a 2-year-old. Adams said Morgan consulted him for legal advice and made incriminating statements.

In a letter he sent Judge Peters last month, Adams spelled out what he believed would result from his testimony. "It became apparent that the State Attorney's Office would make no official 'promises' of a specific sentence in exchange for my testimony as a state witness Adams wrote.
