It was the occasion of the Orpheus' an- rual masquerade and. grand ball, and the costumes of the dancers, imstly of the Colonial style, added a great patriotic tingle to the elaborate affair and served the' double purpose of an entertaining spectacle and commemorating the birthday of the man who was. "First in Peace. First in War, nd First in the Heartsof his Countrymen." The big auditorium was decorated with the national ooilors. In the center was the dancng court, surrounded by a srries of beautiful white pillars surmounted with electric lights.

The entrances were guarded by heralds who permitted only costumed dancers to enter. Around the court was a broad promerwide where the masqueraders wont through their pranks before the peinng of ceremonies. 1 aiciiic vi lij in even ing dress with carnival cap and decoration, the reception committee in lung's lieutenants uniform and the floor committee in Lafayette costume met in the center of the court while the bands played. Albert Hutter pinned the carnival banner to the Stars and Stripes, which were raised announcing the opening of the ball. At 10:30 o'clock a pageant of Washington's days emerged from the south end of the hall led by the Seventy-fourth Regiment band in grenadier costumes. The first float represented "Washington crossing the Delaware, with John S. Embleton impersonating the great general.

Behind these cam the reception committee and a continental drum corps. A second float rep resented Washington's farewell address, with H. O. Hutter as the first president This was followed by the floor committee and colonial dames, the carnival float and the Kleine Rath. The Stately Minuet.

Sixteen couples selected from the floor committee and the colonial dames opened the dancing with a minuet under the direction of Charles H. Van Arnam. At midnight the revelers formed in 'line for the grand march, at the conclusion of which band and orchestra united in playing the "Star Spangled Banner" while the merrymakers unmasked. There will he seventy-five (75) pictures, representing plays, songs, books and proverbs, in the contest, and prizes aggregating more than $5,000 in value will be awarded readers of The Enquirer and Sunday Courier who send in the correct or nearest correct answers to the entire series of pictures. One picture appears in the Daily Enquirer ever' day and one in the Sunday Courier every Sunday. The first picture was published, in Thursday's Enquirer, February 5.
