Collections Have Been Good and Progress is Being Experienced on Work Some Minor Delays. According to Secretary J. M. Graham, the new Y. M.

C. A. building, now in course- of construction, from present indications, will be completed and ready for occupancy about July 1. It was believed a short time ago that the building would be completed by June 1, several minor delays have been experienced such as will entitle the contractors to additional time after the contract time expires June 12. Good progress is now being made, however, and the contractors are busy with the inside work.

The Y. M. C- A. has until January 15 to fulfill the requirements that the building being completed within five years after the death ot the donner. For several months past Tampans and residents of other cities have- been wondering how much longer the price of the broom, the great household necessity and husband tamer, would continue to rise-. The price has been steadily climbing for the past year and may climb Some talk has been heard of a broom trust which has assumed control of the market and among those who are worrying over the trust situation it may be a cause of relief when the announcement is made that the high prices are directly caused by a shortage in the crop. According to figures furnishe-d by the- Lenfestey Broom Works, of this city, leading broom manufacturers of this part of the State, the crop ot broom corn of the country for the past year was only fifteen or sixtee-n thousand tons and the average output is about fifty thousand tons As crops for several years have been rather short, there was no reserve and prices went up immediately.

So anxious were dealers to buy up what crop tnere was that many of them hired automobiles at $15 an hour to go over tho broom corn district and buy up the material in the field. The principal sections for raising broom corn are Oklahoma and Kansas. The havoc was played by the droughts and hot winds in some places and flood in others. Unusually a ton of broom corn is raised on two or three acres of ground, but during lasr year only a ton to every eight or twelve acres was produced. The acreage of broom corn planted was unusually large, and had It all produced, the market probably would have been swamped.

It is estimated that last year's crop will produce seventeen million brooms. As there are fifteen million families in the country who use brooms, this leaves a broom and seventh to each family. The prices on brooms began to rise last Octpber and are so higi. now that at wholesale, they are selling at" an advance of from $1 to $2.50 per dozen over last year's prices. Brooms that a year ago retailed at 35 cents, according to J.

R. Mickler, the grocer, he Is now selling at cents. There has been no raise in price, however, for the past ninety-days. Some Chance for Consumer. Speaking of food prices in general.

Grocer Mickler yesterday afternoon pointed out that-while many eatables, especially meats, are unprecedently high, other eatables are unusually low, some of them selling lower than ever before. Rice and Irish potatoes, two excellent nutrient articles, are among the latter class, Mr. Mickler selling the former at six pounds for twenty-five cents, and the latter at fifteen pounds for twenty-three cents. Mr. Mickler estimates that this quantity of potatoes will last the average family for a week.

Canned vegetables are also very cheap, Mr. Mickler selling tomatoes for five cents a can and corn for eight cents. Dried beans and peas and canned and dried fruits are selling at a low price. Canned milk, which formerly sold at two cans for twenty-five cents, Mr. Mickler is now selling three cans for twenty cents.

Eight cents will buy a can 'of fine soup. The reduction in price of canned goods Is largely attributable to improved machine-ry and methods used in preparing and packing. Staple Articles Go Up Thirty Per Cent and Prices of Other Food Stuffs Fifteen Per Cent Opinion of County Solicitor Raney Shows Law to Mean Thirty Days Inclusive for Open Books Owing to the interpretation of the State registration laws given by County Solicitor George P.

Raney. those who had not previously had a chance to register were given one yesterday, and County Supervisor of Registration B. C. West had a busy 'day. the books closing finally at 6 p.

m. Mr. West's understanding of the law was that he was to close Saturday night, but Mr. Raney declares that the thirty days mentioned in the law were inclusive and did not mean that the books were to be closed in the evening preceding the thirtieth day. Speaking yesterday of the criticism which had been made of him to the effect that he had kept his office closed during Saturday evening, preventing thosevho paid their poll taxes Saturday evening from registering, Mr.

West yesterday said he kept his office-open until 18:30 p. and as no one else came in, he decided the business over and closed up. Tax Collector Branch's office remained open until midnight. Despite the fact that little interest was exhibited for some time in registering and paying poll taxes, the extra efforts made to rouse voters to perform their duties as citizens has resulted in the number of qualified voters being about the average, if not a little bit better, than is usually the case on off years. A talk with a gTocerymaivof the city shows that it is the consensus of opinion that the prices of staple goods such as hams, butter and lard have gone up thirty per cent during the past year, while such goods as canned stuffs have risen about fifteen per cent in price. Some meats have taken a Jump of fifty per cent and we would all be eating of the flesh of the neck instead of the tenderloin but for the fact that the demand for the portion above! the shoulder would send the price of that kiting. This agreement is approved by the workers for all the candidates, whose names will appear on the ballot in the second primary.
