That's the secret And Then Only For One Minute Has Wind Reached a Hurricane Velocity (Shelton S. Matlack.) Tampa is a city of many advantages rare resources.

It has a harbor which, when the contemplated improvements are completed, will be second to none in this part of the countiy, and will have docking facilities to accommodate enormous volumes of shipping with all parts of the world. With direct railroad connections with the greatest cities of this country and with its stragetic position as the nearest city so situated to the Panama Canal, Tampa's great future as a world port seems assured. With its substantial and progressive citizens and the big cigar, lumber and other industries to fall back on. its growth will be a solid and steady one. But there are other advantages which are often lost sight of, if ever seriously considered at all by Tampans.

These are its natural climatic conditions and its superiority over neighboring Gulf and Atlantic ports in this regard. It is a signilicant fact that Tampa, although apparently, from its geographical position, exposed to the terrible hurricanes of the West Indian waters, is actually protected from these disturbances and that never in its history has it been visited "by a seriously destructive storm. Tampa in Twenty Years. In a more superstitious age, it might he asserted that some god, was exerting his influence in this city's favor, that some potent spell had been cast over the warring elements to make them still.

But now, the light of Twentieth Century knowledge and scientific demonstration, it is known that no circumstance or condition exists that is not caused from some great law. Tampa is a "lucky' city in more respects than one, but her fortune is based on scientific reasons which are sound and reliable and which are absolutely dependable. This fact is of extreme importance. No manufacturing or business enterprise desires to locate where it will be subjected to possible loss or total destruction from the elements, and a knowledge and consideration of Tampa's immunity will bring substantial concerns from other cities less favored to riake their home in Tampa and further contribute to her already great prosperity. Tampa's advantages should be given the wjdest possible publicity by every interest working for her upbuilding.

Take Care of That Expensive Roof Phy'c'ana Mystified. KANSAS CITT, March 19. If ha had not been aroused by an officer, John Fulcher, colored, would have slept longer. As It was he had reeled off a nap of forty-six and one-half hours. An ambitious policeman, after waiting several hours for the sleeper to awake so that the officer could serve a warrant charging Fulcher with arson, prodded the dozing man with a hat pin.

Hqwever, to the champion's credit it must be said he did not come out of slumber with a start. No, indeed. Three miuutes after the officer jabbed Fulcher the sleeper lazily crossed his legs and then arose, remarking that some people never were content to let any one sleep. It seems I'll never get a good sleep again," mused the prisoner after the warrant was read. The case of Fulcher mystifies physicians.

When he recently slept five days the man took no nourishment. age. it was the sixty-mile wind of one minute's duration which unroofed houses in Tampa, and it was the ninety-four miles an hour wind of one minute's that wrecked the city of Key West. The continued wind of a lower velocity did little damage other than backing the tide up into the streets. As the strength of the wind is not judged according to its velocity but according to the square of it velocity, it is shown that the wind that struck Key West last year was two and one-half times as strong as that which struck Tampa in 1903; and during the Key West hurricane the barometer went down to 29.36 inches, the lowest ever recorded in the Uniaed States.

The wind did not rise above twelve miles an hour that day. Back in September, 1900, the fury of a West India hurricane was felt in full force in Galveston, the winds for hours piling up the waters until they overflowed the then scant protection of sea walls, flooded streets, floated away houses and destroyed property to the extent of $20,000,000. Houses were blown away and practically every building destroyed. Train3 were blown off the track on the main land and overturned. Six thousand people were either killed by falling buildings or were drowned.

The storm, according to the Weather Bureau, was the worst ever known in the Western Hemisphere and such a one as it is hoped will never again visit this country. Our Worst Experience. worst experience 'was on September 12, 1903. The storm began in the early morning hours with heavy wind and rain, and at 11:40 a. in response to instructions wired from Washington, a hurricane warning was displayed.

The wind attained a velocity of forty-eight miles an hour and remained high for several hour. About noon an extreme velocity of sixty miles an hour was recorded for one minute. The weather bureau flagstaff bearing the storm warning was blown over and the flags torn to pieces. Roofs were blown from many buildings, including the Almerla Hotel, a number of large cigar factories, awd the building at Franklin and Polk streets then occupied by the Tribune, resulting in this paper's machinery getting a severe wetting. Two lives were lost and an estimated property damage of $200,000 according to the weather bureau records.

Although winds have reached high velocities here at other times, this was the only time in Tampa's history when real damage of consequence was done, and one of the few occasions when the city suffered from a real West India hurricane, most of the disturbances being of the thunder variety. On February 6, 1896, an extreme wind velocity of fortv-eight miles an hour was recorded, but no damage was reported near Tampa. On February 24, 1902, the wind reached forty-eight miles an hour, blowing the weather bureau flagstaff over, and on February 28, four davs later, the wind blew forty-nine miles an ipur. blowing the signal lanterns loose from their loca- cent Inland body of water whlcn is al most completely land locked.
