There are still a number of horses at Fort Erie, some of the stables having remained over for the Hamilton and Fort Erie meet, passing up Detroit in order to re3t up for the other gatherings. The bookmakers will be in evidence at the Hamilton meeting. When the other tracks on the circuit decided to install mutuel machines this season the Hamilton Jockey club favored the pencilers for this year at least, and a large number- of the best known bookmakers who follow the Canadian circuit will be seen in line. In other words, Ford did not expect to live on his reputation of the past and draw the highest salary of any twirler in the league. The prohibition of the emery ball was the undoing of this former wonderful moundsman. The powers that be decreed that the emery ball should not be tolerated in the game. This peculiar ball was the foundation upon which Russell Ford had built his success and reputation.

Without, it he could not be the mystifying individual to the opposing batsman. With it he was the engima of the baseball world. The fact that Ford has won only two games this season is the best evidence of the truth that without the emery ball he was practically helpless in the game. He was like a gun without ammunition.
