Bearing in mind that one of the early developments in the growth of any is a communication system, the first article deals with this specific subject It has special significance la view of the switchover to automatic dial telephone service on May 6. In 1901, long distance telephone service reached Duncan and two phones were installed. The city was served from Victoria by a line constructed under the direction of the late Ellas Castley, and medical services were the first to "book up." Dr. Perry's office and the pharmacy of Robert Ventress were the first premises to have a telephone from which they could speak over long distances.

The main floor will contain a business power and other equipment and employee facilities. The second floor will have only automatic switching machinery and direct distance dialing equipment, The building is part of a $1,375,000 expenditure for dial service In the Duncan exchange, and the introduction of DDD will permit telephone users to dial their own station to station long distance calls. On an international basis it was found that an increased number of central office codes, such as Duncan's "746" and "748" were required for direct distance dialing. Such is progress.
