NANAIMO DAILY FREE PRESS, TUESDAY, MAY 27, 1941. BOXLA TEAMS HAVE WORKOUTS Four-team League In Sight; To Have Gala Opening Night Tuesday, June 3 Spencer's Braves and Nanaimo Bakeries (new senior entry in this season's boxla setup), breezed through a stiff pre-season workout last night at the Civic Arena, in preparation for their opening battle Tuesday evening. Both teams showed plenty of speed and nifty stickhandling as hey went through the paces ir the current season's first practice on the Arena floor. Indians took the newly conditioned floor first. last night, turning in a full hour's chore featured by smooth passing and shooting, interspersed with come hefty checking.

Coach Eddie Brown, who will again mentor the Braves, predicted that his city titleholders will successfully defend their trophy against all comers again this year. Indians will depend largely on the same stars as last year, with the White brothers, Don, Doug and Willie, together with Peter Good, "Steamboat" Len Point, Ralph Maughm and Charlie Williams on the first string. Eddie also inferred that he is planning to sign up some of last year's junior stars to round out his lineup. Nanaimo Bakery, who are replacing the Fletcher entry, have lined up several former Fletcher stalwarts, notably Barney Ross, Jimmy Perry, Allan Watson and Doug Good. The Bakers are also dickering for the services of Buck Benny, Willie McCann and "Red" Carr.

Junior imports include Beaver Thompson, Eddie Green, Wilf Aldred, Bert Manson and Pat White, former star with New Westminster Orphans. Orange Crush and Cal-Ade senior aggregations will have their initial workout tonight. Both are reputed to have uncovered new rookie material, and are confident that they will prove strong contenders in the league race by the time they hit their mid season stride. Opening Date Tentative opening date for this season's play is -set for Tuesday, June 3, and will feature a double-header. Indians will meet Nanaimo Bakeries, with the two drink-teams, Orange Crush and Cal-Ade tangling in the other half of the dual program.

First game will swing into action at 7:30 with the second tilt planned for 8:45 p.m. Both games will be streamlined, in that the quarters will be based on straight 15 minutes of playing time with no time off for whistles, fouls, face-offs, etc. There will be a 4-minute breather between first and second quarters and third and fourth quarters, with seven minutes at the half-way mark of the game. This, it is expected, will speed up the came and allow patrons to witness both fixtures and get away from the Arena shortly after 10 p.m. Regular league games following the opening double-header will then revert to the customary timing in accordance with B.C.L.A.

boxla rules, amateur lacrosse. Projected plans for the grand opening, of the local league will include a military band in attendance at the Arena as a highlight of the official opening ceremonies. FILMS USED TO AID DRIVE FOR WAR LOAN Major Ney, Veteran of Great War, Asks Support For Recruiting Drive and Loan PATRIOTIC PROGRAM Special Victory Loan presentation was made the Capitol Theatre yesterday evening before a packed auditorium. Features on the stage was the Lincoln and Welland Regimental band, which played three martial selections under Sgt. Kiddell, by permission of Lt. Col.

C. A. Muir. Major R. O.

Ney, veteran of Great War, was speaker on the occasion, emphasizing the need for raising of the Victory Loan funds. During the last year he enlisted in the Imperial Army at the age of 15 years, and rose to the command of a company, being seriously wounded toward the end of the war. He first came to Canada in 1925, since which time he has visited all round the world, but still declares that "he has yet to find a better place than this!" "You will find no greater freedom than that enjoyed in Nanaimo. Many do not appreciate this fact. Afe we to be like so many other countries where liberties were not appreciated by the people until lost." The country needs both men and money, and he urged those who still hesitated to enlist as soon as possible.

For those that cannot join up, there remains the work of making a success of loan in order to provide the troops with the best equipment. "Give us the money that we may give them the tools that they may finish the job," he concluded. Mr. Ney was introduced by W. Barraclough, who.

acted as chairman. Patriotic songs included "There'll Always Be an England" and Canada" were sung by Douglas Kirkbride. On the screen a highly appropriate film was included in the program. The recently filmed Canadian picture by the Dominion Department Information "A Letter From Camp Borden" portrays the life and training of the men in the tank corps, infantry, and motorcycle squadrons in camp at that great military centre. Starting with three representative boys entering the camp as rookies, it follows their training through to the final stages where they take active part in a "sham battle." This morning canvassers for the Drive in Nanaimo district received a special screening of this picture, as well as one produced for their benefit by the government, illustrating sales methods, as well as emphasizing with graphic films, the need of money in the various branches of the armed forces if British might is to be developed to a point of equality or superiority to the Germans, in spite of the handicap of years of inactivity in rearming.
